Hot Take: Women’s rowing earns a top-five finish at Ivy League Championships

Sid Singh | Team: Women’s Rowing | Event: Ivy League Championships

Women’s rowing has had strong outcomes in their last two regattas. On April 19, they won 11 out of their 12 races at the Lake Morey Regatta in Fairlee, V.t.; the first, second and third varsity boats were each undefeated. Two weeks later, on May 4, the rowers competed at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass., where all six Big Green boats qualified for the grand finals, and the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four all finished fourth-place. These three boats also finished ahead of Ivy League rival Columbia, which was then ranked 19th in the CRCA national rankings and two spots ahead of the Big Green.

The successful couple of weekends give the team a new wave of momentum ahead of the Ivy League Championship in Camden, N.J., next weekend. Now ranked 19th nationally, Dartmouth will compete against quality competition with five Ivy League schools ranked in the top 15. Based on their recent performances, don’t be surprised if women’s rowing breaks the top-five next weekend and seals an at-large bid to the national championships.

Hot Take: Men’s heavyweight rowing varsity eight sprint to a first-place finish

Sid Singh | Team: Men’s Heavyweight Rowing | Event: Eastern Sprints

Heavyweight rowing has shown no signs of slowing down. A sweep of 10th-ranked Northeastern University last weekend completed an unbeaten dual season for the varsity eight boat, which is now ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association polls. The varsity eight boat began the season with a historic victory against Yale, edging out the Bulldogs to win the Olympic Axe for the first time in the trophy’s 21-year history. They have kept that energy rolling throughout every race this season and racked up two more trophies in the process: the Bill Cup after a win against Boston University and the Packard Cup after defeating Syracuse.

The Big Green varsity eight will look to stay undefeated at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass., next weekend. Among the competition will be third-ranked Harvard, which beat Dartmouth by less than two seconds in last year’s competition. The narrow victory pushed the varsity eight out of the grand-finals last year, a fate they will look to change this time around. With their experience, momentum and hunger for revenge, the Big Green is a dangerous sight for every other boat on the water, and they have the potential to beat them all.
