Danford: Vice-Presidential Candidate Statement

I'm a member of the Class of 2013 from Rollinsford, N.H. I'm a pre-med English major, a member of Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority, co-founder and co-captain of the women's club basketball team and a DOC First-Year Trip leader. I'm also a five-term undergraduate adviser and an active member of the Aquinas House Catholic Student Center.

Although I'm new to Student Assembly, my diverse experiences have led me to develop a keen eye for campus issues. More than that, my time here has made me aware of the fact that there is a large and frustrating disconnect between the needs of the students and the work of the administration. Suril and I are frustrated by this problem, but we're confident that we can create the solution. In order to close the student-administration gap, we first need to fix the problems within Student Assembly. Currently, the Assembly lacks efficacy and relevance as a result of its outdated internal organization. First and foremost, we propose bringing in appointed student liaisons from existing student groups to be active voting members of the Assembly. We propose making the Assembly visible and transparent in all of its proceedings by having a daily updated website that includes a calendar of all campus events, the termly goals of the Assembly and a drop-box for students to post concerns. Finally, we propose twice-a-term campus forums with the administration where students can directly address administrators.

Suril and I bring unique sets of skills and experiences that combine to make us a great team. We work efficiently and effectively together, joining Suril's three years worth of student government involvement with my fresh perspective to be ready to tackle the most pressing campus issues from the get-go.

Our ultimate goal is to bring the Assembly back to you, to make it relevant and adept at effecting real grassroots change that has been sparked by the student voice. This isn't about us; it's about the student voice being heard. It's about you. We pledge to work to bring the Assembly back to being the honest and attention-demanding voice of the vast varied population that is the Dartmouth student body.

We want to help you. So help us by voting for Suril and Julia on Monday, April 16!
