Political rallies for Occupy Wall Street that began in the middle of September are arguably the first social-media-driven demonstrations in United States history. The first rally was held in lower Manhattan and has since spread across the country to Hanover, where students have assembled for Occupy Dartmouth. The movement has gone viral in less serious ways as well. Memes such as "The Fancy Crab" have been spreading around the internet, putting a humorous twist on sentiments regarding the socioeconomic inequality in this country. This past Thursday, a series of images appeared on Reddit.com of a crab in a top hat holding a cane accompanied by different slogans that use sarcasm to ridicule the top 1 percent. Some examples include, "I am the 1 percent because I am Shellfish," "Raise my taxes and you shall not seafood again," "I am the 1 percent shelling you out" and "I got to the top by penny pinching." If bankers felt shell-shocked by all the satire and criticism leveled against them, this sea of memes might not be any help. Oh wait, did I just use more crab-related puns?
