Editor's note: In April 2009, Mohammad Usman, a former member of the Class of 2010 pled guilty to charges of fraud after falsely claiming internship funding, financial aid and grants from the College. He illegally obtained $18,615 from the College. Usman was sentenced over the summer of 2009 to three years of probation, including six months of home detention, as well as a $2,000 fine, after pleading guilty in April to financial aid fraud. Usman left the College in the summer of 2008. Full restitution was paid to Dartmouth before charges were filed in 2009.
To the Editor:
Almost two years have passed since I left the College as a result of my wrongdoings. Before my former Class graduates, I want to say to them, as well as to the entire community, that I am deeply sorry for my actions. To Dartmouth, I am remorseful for breaking the trust that was placed in me. I take full responsibility for my failures. To my former classmates, I apologize if I've let any of you down. I do wish you all well as each of you embarks upon the next chapter of your lives. To my dear friends and mentors, I'm sorry for any pain that I may have caused, and I hope to one day re-earn your trust. To all, I know that words being words, my words here will undoubtedly fall short in conveying the depths of my sentiments, but ultimately atonement will be apart of my life-long journey, and time will be the test of my sincerity.
