New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., on Saturday. Ayotte will vie for the Republican nomination. Rep. Paul Hodes '72, D-N.H., announced his candidacy for the seat earlier this year. In her announcement, Ayotte pointed to her record, saying New Hampshire was rated as the safest state in the country during her 11-year tenure working in the attorney general's office, and added that she will be tough on wasteful spending as senator, according to the Union Leader. Former Gov. Stephen Merrill, R-N.H., endorsed Ayotte at the announcement event.
Many low-income students are unaware of the no-loan financial aid policies recently implemented at many elite universities, including Dartmouth, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. Researchers found that 51 out of the 163 top universities sampled have no-loan policies. While most of the institutions' web sites have information regarding the no-loan policy, many are not very user-friendly, according to The Chronicle. The group suggested that colleges make their web pages more interactive and focus on low-income students' current financial difficulties, rather than the financial benefits of a college education. The group's research will be published in the book, "Recognizing Social Class and Serving Low Income Students in Higher Education: Institutional Policies, Practices and Culture," according to The Chronicle.
The Dartmouth Council on Climate Change held a demonstration on the Collis Center porch on Saturday afternoon, according to council President Timothy Bolger '10. The demonstration was among more than 5,200 events held across the world on Oct. 24 in recognition of International Climate Action Day. The "day of action" served to raise awareness about the need to reduce carbon emissions so that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere fall below 350 parts per million, the safe upper limit, according to 350.org. The bell in Baker tower rang 350 times as part of the event, Bolger said. About 40 students and Upper Valley residents came to the event.
