"By the time it was up and running, it was too late to make a difference," David Nachman '09, vice president of the Assembly Academics Affairs committee, said.
According to the proposal, the student-faculty programming fund will be similar to Student Initiated Programs, which are offered through the Office of Residential Life. The fund will differ from SIPS in that participants do not need to live in the same residential cluster. The fund requires that a minimum of two students participate in each programming event.
According to Nachman, the goal of the fund is to allow students and professors to form better bonds and relationships outside of the classroom. The Assembly will reevaluate the effectiveness of the program at the end of the Fall term.
The Assembly also passed legislation to provide funding for a joint Homecoming event with the Afro-American Society, which will take place on the lawn of Cutter Shabazz before the football game this Saturday. The Assembly will provide $900 for white T-shirts, art supplies and food for the event, which will involve decorating T-shirts for Homecoming.
"One of the goals [of the legislation] is to raise awareness of affinity houses," Raymond Rodriguez '09, vice president of the Diversity and Community Affairs Committee, said. "We are trying to build school spirit and community."
The Assembly also plans to sell T-shirts featuring the Dartmouth moose logo, a proposed Dartmouth mascot, over Homecoming weekend.
"Student Assembly is still gauging student interest, and for now we're still pushing for the Dartmouth moose," Student Assembly President Molly Bode '09 said. "Everyone can gather around the Dartmouth moose."
Leslie Adkins '09 was elected Parliamentarian of the Assembly, defeating candidates Will Hix '12 and Richard Stephenson '12. Adkins is an active Assembly member and former vice president of the Student Life Committee.
Other upcoming efforts discussed Tuesday include a long-term bike program that would allow students to rent bikes for an entire term. According to Dmitriy Gutkovich '10, the Dartmouth Outing Club rents bikes to students, but only on an hourly or weekly rental basis.
The Assembly is also looking into hosting an alternative-space party at Hovey Grill and creating an alcohol education program that would reach out to all freshmen clusters. Also on the Assembly's agenda was an initiative to eliminate individually wrapped silverware on campus, to help improve sustainability, Ruslan Tovbulatov '09, vice president of the Student Life Committee, said.
