COS review, SA proposal differ

Student Assembly discussed differences between the Committee on Standards review report and their own suggestions for COS during Tuesday's meeting.
Student Assembly discussed differences between the Committee on Standards review report and their own suggestions for COS during Tuesday's meeting.

David Imamura '10, who compiled a document comparing the review committee's recommendations with those of the 2006-2007 Assembly committee, said he was disappointed by how little the reports had in common. The review committee report does not reflect Assembly recommendations to increase the burden of proof or allow the release of demographic information of the students who go before the COS.

"They chose not to adopt four [suggestions], partially adopted three and absolutely agreed with one," Imamura said.

Student Body President Molly Bode '09 later said, in an e-mail to The Dartmouth, that the review committee chose not to adopt three of the Assembly committee's recommendations, partially adopted three and agreed with one.

The Assembly will issue an official statement regarding recommendations they hope Dean of the College Tom Crady will consider, Bode said during the meeting.

"We're just showing what happened and whether they followed the recommendations from the 2006-2007 committee," Bode said of Imamura's presentation.

In order to provide students with the opportunity to give feedback about the report, the Assembly will host an open forum, tentatively scheduled for Thursday evening. There will also be opportunities to speak with deans on Thursday and Friday, Bode said.

"It's really important for the Dartmouth community because [COS] is basically the way that we uphold our values in our community," Bode said at the end of Tuesday's meeting. "I encourage you all to read it and send [the Assembly] your comments, and please blitz the COS review committee with your concerns."

The Assembly also announced that it will sponsor its third alternative space party this Saturday in the Collis Center. The party will be co-sponsored by Dartmouth Ends Hunger and will immediately follow the organization's Grassroots Soccer tournament.

Additionally, the Assembly's Student Services Committee said it plans to have a prototype of a "Ride Board" available this weekend to help students find car rides to various locations and potential passengers. This initiative should save students money, Elena Falloon '11 said.

During the General Assembly meeting, members unanimously passed legislation to appropriate funding for the Academic Affairs committee to continue providing random prizes to students who submit course reviews on the Assembly's online course guide. Student participation in the course guide program have increased by a third since prizes were offered as incentives. Prizes this term will be gift certificates to Barnes and Noble bookstores.
