Women's lax upends UNH, remains unbeaten

Dartmouth downed the University of New Hampshire 19-9 as co-captain Whitney Douthett '07 tallied seven goals, leading the Big Green onslaught.

Dartmouth (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) managed to avoid a letdown after opening the season with a thrilling win over Syracuse.

"On attack, we did a better job of being threatening with the ball," head coach Amy Patton said.

Particularly threatening with the ball was Douthett, whose seven goals is the highest total on the team since 2002. Douthett also had one assist.

Co-captain Margo Duke '07 had a career-high four goals, Sarah Szefi '07 had three goals and two assists and Kate Chiusano '09 led the team in assists with three, along with scoring goal.

UNH started the scoring with a goal from Beth Sabiston at 24:47 in the first half, but the Big Green more than answered. Douthett netted a free position shot within a minute; after another minute, Chiusano spun and sunk a perfect lob from Kate Fauth '10. About a minute later, Szefi shot a quick pass from behind the net and connected with Douthett as she sliced through the defense, bringing the score to 3-1.

UNH's Sarah Von Bargan then grabbed her first of two goals, off a free position, but Douthett found the back of the net again less than a minute later. At 14:13, freshman goalkeeper Julie Wadland, who played all but the last few minutes, had her first of four saves.

Kristen Barry '08 netted two goals in the space of sixty seconds with about eight minutes left in the first half. Barry first took a pass from Chiusano and then scored again unassisted.

At 6:56, Duke grabbed the first of her four goals. Jen Pittman '07 then took a pass from Chiusano to net her first of two goals.

"I was very impressed ... [Pittman] worked really hard to get open," Patton said. The UNH defense targeted Pittman throughout the game.

Douthett closed out the scoring in the first half, unassisted, with 1:58 left. Dartmouth led 10-5 at the break. UNH grabbed the first draw of the second half as the sun came out just a bit, but the Big Green quickly shut down any hope of a comeback.

Pittman sunk a feed from Chiusano, Szefi netted a pass from Barry and then scored again unassisted, all before UNH's Michaela Hardy could score the Wildcats' first goal of the second half. "We did really well in draw control," Patton said.

In the second half, Dartmouth dominated the face-offs, controlling 11 out of the 14.

About a third of the way through the second half, Duke unleashed three goals seemingly at will, all within two minutes. After her first, a free position, UNH switched goalies. Duke was unfazed, netting a perfect pass from Szefi and then spun and sunk another, this time assisted by Douthett.

With about 10 minutes left in the game, Christine Carbone of UNH snagged a Dartmouth pass, turned it into a fast break, and slung in a goal. With four minutes left, UNH's Shauna Kaplan ran almost the whole field and scored.

"We need a lot of work," Patton said of the Big Green defense. "One of our [aims] on defense is to make them work for their goals. They got some pretty easy ones today."

The Big Green, and especially the defense, is young this year. Having lost six starters from last year's stellar NCAA runners-up squad, there's a lot of adjusting to do.

"You could see our youth ... We just have to keep growing from last week to this week," Patton said.

The Big Green will next hit the road for their first away game of the season at the University of Massachusetts on Wednesday.
