Harper is still misunderstood

To the Editor:

Some people like to reinterpret what others say just to make them feel better. Andrew Eastman '07, in his letter, does exactly that ("Harper Contradicts Herself," Jan. 10). He should read his own editorial! I read it multiple times to try and see what he was saying. I couldn't see any contradiction.

Harper's quote from her first letter apologizes to those individuals that would be offended by the mascot (read her title), not about bringing the University of North Dakota to Dartmouth.

She clearly concedes that they would still play, but wanted to sincerely apologize for any hurt that caused among our community. It is apparent that her intentions were genuine and respectful of both the Dartmouth community and UND.

She did not say she apologized for inviting UND. Clearly, if you follow the hockey world at all, you know that UND is a very good program and Dartmouth continues to strive to compete against and host the top teams in the country.

For that reason alone, I am fairly sure, we invited them. And anyone that knows varsity athletics, these games are scheduled far in advance and most likely without approval from the athletic director.

Josie Harper was doing the right thing by apologizing for the event that will understandably offend and hurt people within our community, because she cares enough to step up and acknowledge the issue. So please don't try and twist her words to fit what you would like to hear. It's clear, even in your erroneous letter.
