Read Us Our Rights

To the Editors:

It's great that a student institution on campus took the lead and created a program where students could get their questions about Dartmouth and the town's alcohol policies answered by the police and Safety and Security. An informed student body is better able to fully exercise its rights. Sadly, I cannot applaud the administration for taking the same lead on this issue. The administration should be discussing student rights, Police/Dartmouth interaction and the alcohol policy with freshmen during orientation week. UGAs or community directors should hold a short meeting with their halls to answer student questions and review student rights. Granted, I was told over and over not to drink too much, but in terms of how drinking on campus could be affected by the Police and the administration left the student body uninformed. While each individual is responsible for his or her drinking choices and the attendant consequences, Dartmouth has a responsibility to its students to ensure that their interactions with the police are as fully informed as possible.
