Shameful Contempt

To the Editor:

I was angered to read Paul Marino's April 11 diatribe "Berry Library," particularly by the bit where he treats Mr. Berry with the utmost contempt.

John Berry gave $25 million to the College to build a better library, and we should be grateful. The Berry Library may lack some of Baker library's architectural charm, but it certainly holds a lot more books. That $25 million was the largest individual donation in Dartmouth's history and we should be thankful for it. John Berry's son also gave a million dollars to the College for the library, as did the Loren M. Berry foundation that was established by John Berry's father.

John Berry has lent his financial support to this college for years. He endowed the Loren M. Berry Chair in Economics in 1978. He gave money for the Berry Sports Center in 1987. Mr. Berry continues to donate a generous amount of money to the College's annual giving program.

I would like to thank the Berry family for their years of support to Dartmouth College. Not all of the students are ingrates.
