Grand Union shuts its doors next week

Attention shoppers: if you are looking for the nearest red dot special, you will now have to trek to Vermont.

After 10 years of serving the Hanover community, Grand Union grocery store will close its Main Street doors this Saturday, July 22 at 5 p.m.

As the largest supermarket near campus, the Grand Union will change hands and operate under another supermarket chain, P&C, which will complete small renovations before the store. P&C actually occupied that same space prior to Grand Union's arrival a decade ago.

Grand Union was largely successful but failed to renegotiate the terms of its lease with the contracting company Penn Traffic, said Corporate Communications Manager for Grand Union Sue Marsh in a prior interview with The Dartmouth.

Marsh would not describe or specify the terms of contention.

Grand Union's two other New Hampshire stores, which were leased with the same contracting company, will also close at that time.

P&C will open for business approximately two weeks after Grand Union's closing. According to Cathy Maloney, third-in-charge at the Hanover Grand Union, one week will be needed for Grand Union to clean everything out and another week for P&C to complete its renovations and move in.

Leftover food and merchandise will be boxed up and sent to the nearest operating Grand Unions, most likely locations in Vermont, Maloney said.

The other two Grand Union stores in New Hampshire, which are located in West Lebanon and Lincoln, soon will also be turned over to P&C. Grand Union owns 218 stores nationwide, concentrated in six states.
