Keeping with what has been its traditional summer focus, the Student Assembly will spend the term concentrating on community service and student life projects, as well as recruiting new members.
One of the Assembly's first tasks will be to nominate students to serve on several committees and groups related to the Student Life Initiative, which is now entering the implementation phase.
A judicial group, as well as committees dealing with social alternatives, social and dining facilities, alcohol and other drugs, hazing and athletic and recreational facilities are being formed.
Summer Vice President Sabeen Hassanali '02 said a number of the committees will start work this summer, and that the Assembly is now trying to fill spaces on those groups.
According to summer President J.R. Lederer '02, the Assembly will also finish up reports on Dick's House and the D-plan -- both of which were started in the spring -- and plans to submit them to Dean of the College James Larimore.
"Because it's summer and it's just the '02s on campus, our focus needs to be realistic, so we need to make sure whatever timelines we have we can accomplish our goals," Hassanali said.
Among the many short-term projects is a telephone and address directory for Summer term to better facilitate communication among students.
Similar to last summer, a guide to student organizations and their contact information will be mailed this summer to members of the Class of 2004. Hassanali said the guide is also geared towards students on campus to aid their search for new activities for summer.
Students living on-campus will have access to new pots and pans in the Gold Coast and Mass Row residence hall kitchens. The Assembly previously resolved to allocate money for dorm cooking utensils, and this summer the project will run on a trial basis.
Other projects on the agenda include MoreCORPS -- the summer version of DarCORPS -- mugshots, big green bikes and online physical education registration.
"We are setting our goals at a reasonable enough level so that we can accomplish them. It's easy to take on a lot of different projects, but the key is getting them done," Lederer said.
Another focus of the Assembly this term will be recruiting more '02s who may or may not have been involved in the past.
"It would be nice to get more people involved who weren't before," Hassanali said.
For Summer term the Assembly will slightly alter its method of operation. Hassanali said all regular Assembly committees will not be convening this term since the primary focus is on more short-term projects for the summer.
"Our hope is not to focus on how normal committees exist, but to focus on what needs to get done," she said, noting the project-based aspect of summer Assembly operation.
The Assembly will hold its first meeting this Tuesday.
