New deans take posts tomorrow

Incoming Dean of the College James Larimore and Dean of Residential Life Martin Redman will assume their posts tomorrow, replacing acting deans Dan Nelson and Mary Liscinsky.

Larimore comes from Stanford University, where he has been involved in student affairs since 1985, to fill the office vacated at the end of last school year by Lee Pelton, now president of Willamette University. Since Pelton's departure, the post has been filled by Nelson, who will resume his job as senior associate dean of the College tomorrow.

Prior to working at Stanford, Larimore was Dartmouth's assistant director of admissions from 1983 to 1985. Most recently at Stanford, he was assistant to the provost, and completed a Ph.D program in higher education administration and policy analysis at Stanford's School of Education in June.

Larimore served as assistant director of admissions at Dartmouth from 1983 to 1985. His sister graduated from the College in 1985 and directed the Native American Program. Larimore's niece Laura Duncan is a member of the Class of 2001.

In a previous interview with The Dartmouth, Larimore said that after the Winter term announcement of the Trustees' Residential and Social Life Initiative, he recognized that he was going to be one of the "busiest

deans in American higher education."

In the interview, Larimore said he thinks "thoughtful people can engage each other and come up with reasonable strategies" for implementing the Trustees' vision of reformed Dartmouth social and residential life.

Redman comes to the College from Carleton College in Minnesota, replacing Liscinsky, who has been the acting dean since Mary Turco resigned during the 1998 Spring term.

Liscinsky will be special assistant to the dean of the College in September.

At Carleton, Redman was the associate dean of students and director of residential life. In addition to his role as dean of residential life, Redman will act as the East Wheelock Cluster Associate, filling the vacancy left by Creative Writing Professor Cleopatra Mathis.

Redman said in a previous interview with The Dartmouth that he is looking forward to living in the associate's house adjacent to the East Wheelock Cluster to get a better feel for what life at the College is really like.

He described his major goal in coming to Dartmouth as "asking a lot of questions to absorb as much as I can as soon as I can about what Dartmouth students are like."
