House Editorial Displays Hypocritical Intolerance

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to your editorial piece on April 6. You stated that, and I quote:

"Hate and intolerance have no place at Dartmouth, and those who feel the need to force their beliefs on others need to get the picture that such behavior is not welcomed here. Those who intentionally hurt and offend others need to be marginalized on campus to the extent that they and others like them do not feel comfortable here."

What hypocrisy and lunacy is this? I do not support the message sent in the flyers that offended so many. I am a minority. I am a Jew by adoption. I support tolerance and understanding. So here is a paradox your paper has created. Tolerance is virtuous, ergo, intolerance must be obliterated in the name of virtue. Would you people at The D please use some sort of rationale before putting this sort of thought into words? How can you espouse understanding and tolerance while at the same time calling on the community to isolate and humiliate a minority group? Does this in any way increase the level of understanding and communication that leads to a greater, "tolerant," community? I do not think so.

I find it regrettable that The D would take such a stance on this issue. Hate is not a virtue, it is a low base emotion. It does not lead to respect in life. Please re-read the passage above and tell me if using hate to destroy hate is going to bring about a worthwhile and candid discussion of this issue at the College. As the supposed "objective" instrument of the campus that The D purports to be, I expect a greater level of thought and consideration to be put into its own work. I am disappointed in its failure on this issue.
