SA again supports Korean program

The Student Assembly overwhelmingly voted for the second year in a row to support a Korean Language Program, as well as to fund a joint resolution on online student services, at their weekly meeting last night.

The resolution to create a Korean Language Program urges the Humanities Division and AMELL for their support. Last year, the Assembly passed a similar resolution, but AMELL rejected the proposal citing a lack of funds and professors.

This term, however, a visiting professor is teaching two experimental Asian studies courses on Korean culture and politics.

The resolution states that Dartmouth is the only Ivy League school not to have instituted a Korean Language curriculum, and cites the 300 Korean-Americans as the largest ethnic minority on campus.

The crusade to enact a Korean Language and Studies Program has lasted a decade; the Korean-American Students Association has lobbied since 1989 without administrative success.

In its second resolution of the night, the Assembly passed funding for the establishment of an online ride board and classifieds section that would be linked to the Dartmouth Interactive Directory and WebBlitz.

"This is a great way to provide more tangible student services, as well as making the ride board and classifieds more efficient and accessible," said Assembly member and resolution sponsor Lauren Lafaro '02.

The "Basement Development Team," creators of the DID and Web Blitz, would implement the program, which would cost the Assembly $750, primarily in labor costs.

Completion of the new online links are set for this spring.
