Assembly votes down bus subsidies

The Student Assembly voted unanimously to forego subsidizing round-trip tickets for buses to Boston and New York for students at the end of Spring term at their meeting last night.

The resolution, which was sponsored by Kelly Bodio '00 and five other Assembly members, stated that subsidizing the buses would benefit only sophomores, since it is only possible to subsidize round trip tickets.

Treasurer Dom LaValle '99 said last night's resolution would make available to the Assembly $800 which had previously been earmarked to subsidize the buses.

The meeting started with LaValle's distribution of a report on the Assembly's expenditures for the past year.

During the meeting's committee reports, Dave Parker '00 was nominated to replace Josh Green '00 as the new chair of communications.

Assembly President-elect Frode Eilertsen '99 then spoke about a project to collect various supplies on campus, which will be taken to Bosnia to help residents of the war-torn area.

In his committee report, Parker discussed a revamped on-line calendar which features College events.

In the report of the membership and internal affairs committee, Assembly Vice President Chris Swift '98 said they had received more than 100 applications for College committee positions.

At the beginning of the meeting's open forum, Aurora Leute '97 spoke to the Assembly about the College Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs, which is expected to release its report to the College by the end of the term.

Following discussion of the CCAOD's work, LaValle and Unai Montes-Irueste '98 both spoke about their conduct at last week's Assembly meeting.

LaValle apologized to members for having used an offensive term in discussion of the ethnic studies resolution at the Assembly's April 29 meeting.

LaValle used the term "colored" at the Assembly meeting two weeks ago.

LaValle said that he and Montes-Irueste had been rude to each other, but he refused to apologize for "drinking before the meeting," since he did not regret his behavior. He said that many factors contributed to the atmosphere at last week's meeting.

Montes-Irueste apologized for his "choice of language and aggressive behavior" at last week's meeting. He said an Assembly member's behavior at a meeting spreads to students across the campus and therefore "affects the Student Assembly as a whole."

Kially Ruiz '98 then presented and asked for input on a resolution he said he is considering sponsoring next week which asks the Assembly to "decry the negative tone that [The Dartmouth] brought to [Assembly election] campaign."

After discussion of Ruiz's proposal, the Assembly discussed a recent meeting of the executive committee of the Ivy Council before Assembly President Jon Heavey '97 adjourned the meeting.
