SA to vote on Kartalopoulos removal

The Membership and Internal Affairs Committee will decide whether to impeach Assembly Treasurer Bill Kartalopoulos '97 at a meeting Sunday, according to Assembly President Jon Heavey '97.

Kartalopoulos was absent at last night's meeting, last week's general Assembly meeting and both of the two Assembly executive meetings this term.

According to the attendance resolution passed by the Assembly last term, members are allowed three absences before being reviewed by the Membership and Internal Affairs Committee.

"I was asleep," Kartalopoulos wrote in an e-mail message about last night's meeting. "I've been kind of sick lately."

"I was out of town for all of the first three meetings I was expected to attend," Kartalopoulos wrote. "I arrived on campus late this term due to some family commitments."

Assembly Vice President Chris Swift '98, Membership and Internal Affairs Committee chair, refused to comment on the subject.

Heavey said Kartalopoulos has shown remarkable dedication to the Assembly during his first three years of involvement.

Now "he has put himself in a position where he will be put up before the Membership and Internal Affairs Committee for a vote of impeachment.," Heavey said.

According to the Assembly's constitution, four out of the five Membership and Internal Affairs Committee members must vote in favor of recommending the removal of an Assembly member.

That recommendation must then be approved by two-thirds of the Assembly's Executive Committee. Members who have been removed are allowed to reapply for membership.

"There's a lot of issues that can be a lot more important than the Student Assembly," Heavey said. "I recognize that."

"It's just unfortunate that he has put himself in the position he's in now," Heavey said.
