Hinman box overflow hassles affected students

A number of students have reported being inconvenienced after about 400 Hinman boxes were moved to new locations during Winter break.

Because of an overflow in people who needed HBs at the start of the 1996-97 academic year, many students were forced to share their boxes with someone else during Fall term.

A number of new boxes were built to alleviate the problem, according to Hinman Post Office Postmaster Howard Durkee, and more boxes were constructed to replace old ones that were broken. Once the new boxes were finished, the Hinman Post Office went ahead with the reassignment of the 400 HBs.

Students' box numbers have not changed, and because mail delivery is based on box number, students should be receiving their proper mail, Durkee said.

In addition to a slightly new location, the new Hinman Boxes have some cosmetic changes. Although most students still have the same box number, the new boxes have different combinations -- which the reassigned students received immediately upon their return to the College at the beginning of the term.

Some students have voiced complaints about their new boxes.

Peggy Stolt '99 said the relocation was inconvenient because she was unable to retrieve her mail immediately.

Others, though, said they found the new location convenient.

"My new spot's pretty cool," Alexei Wedmid '00 said. "It's a pain to learn the new combination but the location actually worked out better."
