Tennis teams round up fall season

The women's tennis team will play its last fall dual this afternoon against rival Boston College on Topliff Courts at 2:00 p.m.

"It's a big match for us," Coach Chris Kerr said. "BC's ranked 15 in the nation. It would be really good to win that match."

The Big Green, a particularly young team with only one senior and one junior, has been using the fall season to gain experience.

This past weekend Dartmouth traveled to Yale to play in the ECAC Championships and did well, rebounding from a tough Eastern Regional Tournament the weekend before last.

Kerr said the team finished in a clump with Pennsylvania, Penn State, West Virginia and Virginia. Kerr said the teams were "all very close."

Co-Captain Trudy Muller '96 said the result was "much better than the week before. It renewed out spirit a bit."

Kerr agreed. "I feel better about it. As I say to the women of the team, it is easy to get discouraged, but we have been playing against the best teams [in the East]. You just have to keep things in perspective."

Katie Kirkmire '98 lead Dartmouth in the tournament, winning the consolation round of the D-flight singles after losing a tough first round match in the regular draw.

"Katie had ended up with a pretty good record at number four [6-5], especially since she moved up from number six [last year]," Kerr said.

In other singles action, Tracy Lee '98 made the finals of the A-flight consolation round, as did Sarah Anderson '99 in the F-Flight. Muller said Tracy had a couple "good wins."

Anderson has a 5-3 record.

"She's a freshman and [has] come in and done a really good job," Kerr said.

Muller, playing in the B-flight, and Courtney Dill '99, competing in the E-flight, both won their first round matches, putting them both into the top four of their respective flights.

The doubles competition saw some of the best competition at the tournament.

Dartmouth's number one team of Lee and Kallie Buehler '97 lost an 11-9 tie-breaker in what Muller characterized as a tough and exciting match.

Number two doubles team of Muller and Dill lost their first match and then defeated a team from the University of Pennsylvania in the back draw.

With doubles matches played first in dual competitions, doubles play will be key for the Big Green tomorrow against BC if they hope to capture an early lead and gain momentum.

"This is our last dual match of the season, so we're psyched for that," Muller said. "They [BC] have a strong team. We want to finish out the season with a win."
