Field hockey to tackle Cornell

The Dartmouth field hockey team is currently preparing for an important weekend, as the Big Green try to improve their Ivy League standing.

After falling to Princeton last weekend, 4-2, the Big Green hopes to come away with a win this weekend at home.

Dartmouth's record is 6-5 overall, 2-2 in the Ivy League. The Big Green have lost their past two games but definitely hold the advantage playing in Hanover on Homecoming weekend.

Cornell has lost five in a row, including a 2-1 loss to Penn last Sunday.

"Cornell is a solid team," Coach Julie Dayton said. "They have a few good players who we'll need to key on, but we need to stay in our own game plan."

Dartmouth's game plan consists of utilizing their strengths, namely good passing combinations and constant intensity on the field.

With both sophomore standout Amy Yost and co-Captain Cynthia Roberts '96 back and playing, Dartmouth has a good chance of winning.

"With everybody back playing, we are relearning our early season playing style, and working together as a team," Dayton said. "We now feel like we're back on track and we're ready to play on Saturday."

Cornell's record is 1-2 in the Ivy League, 6-6 overall. Key players for the Big Red include leading scorer Emily Robb with 10 goals and three assists, and Cari Hills, with eight goals and six assists.

Dartmouth's Amy Coughlin '96 and Sarah Sedgwick '98 led the team in scoring, both have five goals and one assist. Coughlin has been on a scoring rampage lately, scoring four goals in the past three games.

Plus, veteran goalie Lauren Demski '96 has an outstanding goals-against average of 2.0, while Cornell's goalie carries a 1.85.

"We need to play like we want it," Dayton said.

While this game could dictate what Dartmouth's chances are for the Ivy League title, the Big Green will have an opportunity to show just how badly they want it on Chase Field at 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
