Women's track finishes second at Heps

From 1,500 meters to 10,000 meters the Dartmouth women's track and field team swept every race, dominated the distance events, and received useful points from the field events, on the way to a surprising second place finish in the Heptagonal Championships at Navy last weekend.

The finish is a stark improvement over the team's seventh place finish last term. The men's team, also competing this weekend at Navy, finished third.

Maribel Sanchez '96 led the squad, winning both the 3,000 meters, and the 5,000 meters. Sanchez won the 5,000 meters in a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 16:33.06 and led a four-runner Dartmouth parade. Jenna Rogers '98, Emily Hodgson '98 and Kristin Cobb '95 rounded out the first four places.

Deidre Milligan '98 led another Green and White march in the 10,000 meters. She won the event in 35:51, with teammates Cobb and Kristin Pierce '96 finishing second and third respectively.Kristin Manwaring '96 rounded off the distance event sweep, winning the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:22.89.

While the majority of Dartmouth's 113 points came from the distance events, the field events brought timely scoring. Dartmouth stalwart Amy Winchester '96 scored in three events.

Winchester won the shot put with a NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 48' 9" 1/2. She placed second in the discus, and fourth in the javelin.

Sarah Howald '96 took third in the javelin and sixth in the shot put. Sarah Hood '98 placed fourth in the discus.

The men ran up 90 points to finish third.

Sam Wilbur '94 led the Big Green charge with first place finishes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters. Wilbur won the 3,000 steeplechase in 8:49.76, with teammate Aaron Bouplon '95 close on his heals in second and Jack Dwyer '96 in sixth.

The 5,000 meters showed much the same story, as Wilbur defended his indoor crown in 14:28.72 and junior Chris Langan finished sixth.

In the 10,000 meters Ted FitzPatrick '95, shrugging off hip and back problems, won in 30:27.73, with Kai Richter '95 third.

In the weight events Adam Nelson '97, Alek Ghanotakis '97 and Dave Erikson '96 took two scoring places in each of the three events, led by Nelson who won the shot put with a throw of 56'11 1/4.

In the jumps, Steve Clark '97 cleared 6'10 3/4" to finished second in the high jump.
