The Dartmouth women's hockey team split games this weekend, beating Colby, 6-3, and losing to New Hampshire, 5-1. With the win, UNH avenged a 2-0 loss to Dartmouth earlier this season.
Dartmouth 6, Colby 3
Saturday's win at Colby kept Dartmouth in sixth place in the ECAC.
"It was a good team win," senior Captain Rachel Rochat said. "We started slow and came back. It was important for the ECAC title."
The game began slowly for Dartmouth and the team trailed 2-1 by the end of the first period. Sarah Hood '98, playing on the wing for the weekend, received a pass from wing Malaika Little '97 who was behind the net and shot it past the goalie.
In the second period, Dartmouth began to fly, scoring four goals to Colby's one and taking a commanding 5-2 lead. Goals were scored by Hood, who had a wrap-around, right-wing Sarah Devens '96, who had a slapshot to the lower corner, defenseman Michelyne Pinard '98, who skated past several Colby players and decked the goalie, and left-wing Rochat, who put hers in right at the end of the period.
The teams got one goal each in the third period. Devens scored this one for Dartmouth, to bring the final score to 6-3.
"It was a hard game. They have some good players," Coach George Crowe said. "It was a little crazy because the refs were calling everything. But it wasn't even. We spent about 18 minutes in the penalty box to their two minutes."
UNH 5, Dartmouth 1
On Sunday, Dartmouth faced-off against UNH, currently second in the ECAC. UNH took control from the start, keeping the puck in Dartmouth's end for most of the first four minutes, and taking an impressive 4-1 lead after one period.
UNH's Tricia Dunn scored the first goal of the game. Dartmouth goalie Sarah Tueting '98 made several impressive saves before Dunn found the net.
Forty-five seconds later, UNH was back at the Dartmouth net. This time Cherilyn Pickles scored with an assist by Jennifer Turner. Dartmouth was quick to follow. One minute later, center Sarah Howald '96 found the goal.
But the brief lapse did not demoralize UNH. Just 17 seconds after Dartmouth's goal, Dunn notched her second of the game.
With three and a half seconds left in the first period, UNH's Liz Neiley had a slapshot to score, bringing the score up to 4-1.
Throughout the first period, UNH consistently beat Dartmouth to the puck. Dartmouth appeared to be watching the game more than playing the game. "UNH was flying and we let them go," Crowe said.
In the second period Dartmouth picked up the pace. The second period went scoreless.
In the third period, only UNH scored. Tatarouns had this goal, making the final score 5-1.
Throughout the game, Dartmouth had many opportunities to score but was unable to capitalize.
Tueting had 30 saves while UNH goalie Dina Solimini had 25.
On Wednesday, Dartmouth takes on Harvard in a game that will determine whether Dartmouth wins the Ivy League.
