The Student Assembly's executive committee last night unanimously supported a resolution calling for the administration to provide a similar-sized building to Webster Hall.
The resolution, which also calls for a rally at Webster to raise awareness of the issue, will be voted upon by the general Assembly at its meeting tomorrow night.
The rally would be held on either Jan. 20 or Jan. 26, depending on the schedule of student performing groups and the availability of Webster.
The motion is co-sponsored by Assembly President Rukmini Sichitiu '95 and Assembly Vice President John Honovich '97.
The general Assembly passed a similar resolution last week, but this resolution takes out language calling for the administration to halt its plans to convert Webster into a Special Collections library.
"We think it's the best chance for getting new programming space," Honovich said. "The administration is more likely to compromise and build a new auditorium than to stop the conversion of Webster."
Honovich said the Assembly also picked English Department Chair Bill Cook to speak, in part because of his strong rhetorical skills.
"This rally will show the administration we have tangible support and will serve to further inform students ... It shows the SA is willing to come together for this," Honovich said.
The resolution states Webster is the only on-campus facility suitable for crowds between 400 and 800 people, making it ideal for speakers and concerts.
Honovich and Sichitiu have had several bitter political disagreements over the last term, and Honovich said his co-sponsoring the resolution with Sichitiu shows they can work together on a non-partisan issue.
