Kim kicks off symposium Sat.

A year-long Student Assembly-sponsored symposium called "Women, Leadership and Activism" will kick off with a keynote address tomorrow about the experiences of minority women in academia.

Elaine Kim, an Asian American Studies professor at the University of California at Berkeley, will speak tomorrow at 7 p.m in 13 Carpenter. Kim is widely known for her examination of the relationship between power dynamics and gender across cultural lines.

Her speech is part of the year-long program designed by the Assembly "to enhance the community by promoting discourse and debate on a number of salient issues, including gender dynamics, health sexuality, power, resource allocation and self expression," according to a statement from the Assembly committee that planned the symposium.

Tuesday night, the Assembly voted after one-and-a-half hours of debate to put $5,000 -- about one-eighth of its total budget -- toward funding the symposium.

Various campus groups will also contribute to the funding of each individual event. Kim's speech is funded by the Programming Board and co-sponsored by about 10 other organizations.

Although the specifics for the symposium are still being worked out, Assembly Vice President Rukmini Sichitiu '95 said it will feature a variety of speeches and panel discussions involving prominent scholars, national grass roots activists and individuals from within the Dartmouth community.

In addition to Kim, Angela Davis, a well-known African American scholar, will speak this term.

The symposium will address the topic from a different perspective each term: "Women in the Academy: Change and Implications" in the fall; "Our Lives, our Health: Development or Stagnation?" in the winter; and "Activism: Re-examining Politics and Expression" in the spring.
