Greek Week to benefit charities

A week of activities to benefit Upper Valley charities organized by the College's Greek system kicks off today.

Sixteen fraternities and six sororities divided into three groups to provide entertainment for the event, which the Coed Fraternity Sorority Council is running.

"It is a fairly good opportunity to get houses to come together," CFSC President Matt McGill '96 said. "It is also a good opportunity to show that the Greek system cares about the community around us."

He said this is the first time Greek Week has been held to benefit Upper Valley charities.

He added the CFSC spent between $500 to $600 and each group spent around $200 for their individual events. McGill said the groups organized their own events and have been meeting since the beginning of the term.

Alicia Jennings, the public relations chair of the CFSC, said Greek Week has been at "the forefront of our agenda."

Today, from 5 p.m. until 8, Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity will host "Dartmouth Unplugged."

The concert, hosted by Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity, Alpha Theta coed fraternity, Chi Gam and Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority, will benefit Headrest, a crisis support center in the Upper Valley.

Everett Blake, the famed square dance caller, will be shouting directions on Tuesday night at Zeta Psi fraternity. "Square Dancing for Seniors" will benefit senior citizens from the Mascoma Area Senior Center, Jennings said.

Besides Zete, the event is hosted by Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities, Delta Gamma sorority and Phi Tau coed fraternity.

On Wednesday, the "Road Race though Pine Park" will begin at 4:30 p.m. after check-in at 4. The entry fee is $5 and all proceeds go to the Listen Center.

The race is sponsored by Alpha Delta, Alpha Phi Alpha and Chi Heorot fraternities and Epsilon Kappa Theta and Kappa Kappa Gamma sororities.

On Thursday, Delta Delta Delta sorority and Kappa Chi Kappa, Phi Delta Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities will coordinate a book drive.

Friday will be the last day of events before the block concert on Saturday. A three-hour volleyball tournament will be held on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8. The cost is $4 per team.

The events will raise money through $2 canned food donations, McGill said.

McGill said Tabard coed fraternity is not participating in the week, though all members of the Greek system were asked.

McGill said it has been difficult to set up the week and added he was pleased with it.
