Party ends in arrest

Hanover Police and an ambulance from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center responded to a call from Safety and Security officers to assist an intoxicated woman at a sorority party Friday night.

The ambulance was called at about 11:30 p.m. for Heidi Taylor '96, who was at Delta Delta Delta sorority's Date-a-Delta party held at The Tabard coed fraternity.

Taylor was taken to the DHMC emergency room. At 8:45 a.m. Saturday, the hospital released her upon recovery from excessive intoxication, an administrative coordinator at the DHMC said.

Taylor's roommate Meredith Scott '96, who had gone outside to look after her, was arrested by Sgt. Frank Moran of the Hanover Police Department on charges for underage possession of alcohol.

Moran said Hanover Police received a call from Dartmouth Safety and Security for assistance at 11:32 p.m. When he arrived, the ambulance from the DHMC was already on its way.

Moran said he was told by students at the party to talk to Scott while he was investigating the circumstances leading to Taylor's condition.

Upon seeing Scott was drunk, Moran placed her under arrest and took her into custody. She was released at 1:10 a.m.

"When I got there, [Scott] was not outside," Moran said. "Her identity was passed on to me by a number of people as someone I could talk to."

Moran said a minor charged with a first offense can take an alcohol education program and avoid legal action, but he did not know if Scott had chosen to enroll in the program.

About 60 to 80 people were at the Tri-Delt party, which began at 10 p.m., said Richard Esposito '94, who was helping out at the party.

Esposito said he and Toby Maitland-Lewis '94 served "diet coke and mixed drinks" to party-goers.

Tri-Delt President Emily Jones '95 said her house had no statement regarding Friday night's events. Both Taylor and Scott declined to comment.
