Women's hoops lose

With 10 minutes left in the second half of last night's women's basketball game against Rhode Island, Betsy Gilmore '94 fired a routine pass to Brandi Jones '95 on the wing. On a normal night, the sure-handed Jones would catch the ball and in one fluid motion swish a three-pointer.

But it wasn't a normal night.

The pass was a little too low, Jones didn't get both hands on it and the ball bounced between her legs and out of bounds.

That was the kind of night the Big Green were having.

The University of Rhode Island used 32 Dartmouth turnovers and a 47-19 second half to pound the Big Green, 74-46, last night in Leede Arena. The loss snapped a six-game Dartmouth winning streak and evened the Big Green's record at 6-6.

"I told the team that this was a wake-up call," Coach Chris Wielgus said. "We can play a lot better than this."

"We did [most of the damage] to ourselves," Wielgus said. "We didn't move on offense, we didn't move on defense and you can't win when you're lethargic or stagnant."

Give some credit to Rhode Island, too. The victory upped the team's record to 12-4, which includes a 20-point win at Harvard and a 30-point thrashing of New Hampshire. Dartmouth beat Harvard by 13 last Saturday and squeaked by New Hampshire, 46-42, back in December.

"That was a fine Rhode Island team," Wielgus said. "They didn't make a lot of mistakes. They're not much different from the Ivy League teams, though."

Jones led all scorers with 19 points, and kept the Big Green close in the first half with her 7-7 first half shooting. Gilmore scored six and added eight rebounds, three assists, six steals and two blocked shots.
