Right Call on Club Sports

To the Editor: Craig Rubens '06's editorial on club sports ("Club Sports Slowly Being Axed," May 26) highlights a problem that is not unique to the ultimate club. As a member of the then-still-fledgling club hockey team, I can affirm the absolute resistance that the school has to club sports, that we as a team experienced in multiple confrontations with school officials. Like many now-retired club athletes, some of my fondest memories of school are middle-of-the-night road trips back from games in the middle of nowhere, sneaking inside jokes into articles submitted to The Dartmouth, or just post-practice dinners at Food Court with teammates. Life would be great if all club sports could be as well-funded as the rugby team but we all know that is not likely to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, perhaps the College's purchasing a few less flat screen TVs in Berry and spending a little more to help Club sports, in which almost a quarter of all students participate, would be warranted.
