Professor DeSilva part of human fossil discovery

Incoming professor of anthropology Jeremy DeSilva, who joined the College faculty this year, describes himself as a “New Englander” attracted to “a campus in the mountains.” But to students of anthropology, he is perhaps better known as a member of a global team of 60 scientists that recently found evidence of a new human ancestor, Homo naledi, in the form of over 1,600 fossils in South Africa’s Rising Star Cave.

Memorial Challenge raises $35,672 for cardiac research

More than 450 students came together to work out and celebrate the lives of Blaine Steinberg and Torin Tucker, both members of the Class of 2015 who died suddenly last year due to heart complications, at the first annual Memorial Challenge at Memorial Field last Saturday. The event raised $35,672, surpassing its goal of $30,000, which will go toward cardiac research at the Heart and Vascular Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Dartmouth participates in green power partnership

Although Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania were the only two schools in the Ivy League to participate in the Green Power Partnership 2014-2015 College and University Green Power Challenge, the Ivy League comes in third out of about 39 participating conferences in terms of overall green power usage. This is largely due to Penn’s more than 200 million kilowatt-hours of green power, as compared to the College’s 7.3 million.

Students involved in fewer alcohol-related incidents

While this year’s Green Key weekend involved fewer alcohol-related incidents than last year’s, records indicate that this year’s numbers closely resemble those of years prior to 2014, with Safety and Security director Harry Kinne calling last year an “abnormality” in terms of increased safety incidents.

Dartmouth’s 43rd powwow attracts visitors from around the region

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the Green transformed into a bustling, communal space for Native Americans students at Dartmouth to celebrate the 43rd annual powwow. With the scent of frybread and bison burgers wafting across the Green, vendors showcased their handcrafted artistry, performers danced in traditional regalia and flags hung to honor Native tribes.

College awards professors $450,000 for seed funding

Ten proposals of the 51 submitted were awarded seed funding from the Office of the Provost, the College announced last week. Funding for the 10 projects will go toward purchasing necessary equipment, financially supporting team members and running experiments to see if the project could potentially work.
