Crew finishes first; prepares for Charles

The Big Green men's heavyweight crew team overcame a blunder, that cost them nearly two boat lengths to the entire field, and came from behind to win the Bausch & Lomb Invitational Regatta in Rochester, New York last Sunday. The mistake came early in the race when one of the Dartmouth's oars got caught up in the choppy water and brought the boat to a near stand still.

Cross country falters slightly

Dartmouth could not repeat its championship performance from last season this past weekend at the New England Collegiate Championships but ran well enough to place second in the meet. Providence College gained the championship team title as well as the first two spots in the individual results. "We felt we did really well," co-Captain Jack Dwyer '96 said. Providence is really strong." Dwyer finished first for Dartmouth and third overall running four seconds behind the first place runner, World Championship finalist Mark Carroll of Providence.

Women's golf places third in Invitational

Having a week off from competition seems to have been a very good thing for the women's golf team, as the Big Green came back from the break and posted some sizzling numbers at the Mount Holyoke Invitational this past Friday and Saturday. The Big Green took third place on the course of Mount Holyoke, shooting 331 on both days for a total of 662.

Basketball starts fall practice

For Matt Bush '96, a chem major, formulas and equations are no problem. As co-captain of the men's basketball team, Bush feels Dartmouth has all the chemistry of a championship team. "Our goal this year is to win the Ivy League," Bush said. The Big Green began their quest with a three hour practice on Sunday.

The Dartmouth football team continued to be full of surprises at Yale on Saturday, thrashing the Bulldogs at the Yale Bowl, 22-7 in front of a crowd of 14,729 spectators. The Big Green football squad, now 3-2, loves to make things interesting.

Volleyball captures first Ivy League win

It will be a day to remember for the women of the Dartmouth volleyball team. Not only did the team improve its record to 12-6, but it captured its first Ivy win in its history as a fully-funded team. The team went into Leede Arena this weekend with a mission to improve its Ivy League record and defeated Columbia University in five games. "We needed this win," Coach Ann Marie Larese said.

Women's soccer gets back on track

The women's soccer team ended a two game losing streak Saturday when the Big Green trampled the Princeton Tigers 2-0 at Chase Fields. Dartmouth, now 6-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League, shut out the Tigers for the fifth straight game. "It was a good win, but I still think we didn't play our best," April Rasala '99 said.

Volleyball looks for first Ivy win tonight

The women's volleyball team will look to tally its first Ivy League victory at home when the Big Green take on Cornell tonight at 7:00 and then battle Columbia tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. Dartmouth opened its Ivy League season last weekend when it traveled to Princeton and Penn.

Women's soccer loses to BC

After losing to Boston College 2-1 yesterday afternoon, the women's soccer team is looking to overcome something it is not used to having -- a losing streak. The Big Green, who were Ivy Champions two years ago and runner-ups last year, have been known for consistent play, but so far this year Dartmouth is struggling to find that winning combination. "We just need to come back together," forward Melissa McBean '97 said.

New hockey assistants named

As the men's ice hockey team continues its preparations for the opening of the regular season next month, the players are not only becoming familiar with each other, but are also trying to acquaint themselves with an almost entirely new coaching staff. Three of the four coaches from last year are gone, with Head Coach Roger Demment being the only returnee from 1994-95. In somewhat of a coaching revolving door, last year's assistant coaches, Matt Carlin, Mike Cavanaugh and John Fletcher are out, and newcomers Guy Perron, Rob Abel and Doug Weiss '88 are in. First-Assistant Coach Carlin left the team at the end of the summer to take a similar position with the Cornell University hockey program.

Athlete of the Week

Beth Crenshaw '99, a women's cross country runner, has made significant improvements this year as a freshman which helped lead her team to first place last weekend at the Maine Invitational earning her this week's athlete of the week award. "Beth was very important because she really came through and enabled us to get six women in before Boston College's third," co-Captain Kristin Manwaring said.

Water polo competes

This weekend, the water polo team embarked on its most vicious and torturing trip of the season encompassing two tournaments in two days. First up were the Ivy League Championships where the Big Green found themselves challenged by the big three varsity teams of the Ivy League -- Brown, Princeton and Harvard. "It's really a big compliment to the program and to the team to be invited," Coach Jim Wilson said.

Rugby kills Amherst: Men prepare for title match this weekend

The Men's Rugby team plays the University of Connecticut this Saturday in a match that will determine the New England Championship -- a title the Big Green has held for six of the past 10 years. The game, which will be at home on Chase Field, will be a game fans won't want to miss. This past weekend, the ruggers showed just why they are in a position to win it again, as they routed Amherst 74-11. Amherst came into the match looking to repeat its victory of last spring over the Big Green.

Football faces red zone scare

There is a new red scare in Hanover this fall. No, communists have not taken over Baker Library. This scare is taking place at Memorial Field, home to the Dartmouth football team, and it would be more fittingly called a red zone scare. The red zone is the area on the football field inside of the opposition's 20 yard-line.

Tennis reaches semis at ECAC's

The Dartmouth men's tennis team enjoyed a successful weekend, advancing to the semifinals of the ECAC Team Championships, a tournament featuring all of the Northeast's top teams. The Big Green's result came courtesy of wins over Army 6-1 and Yale 6-0, but the run was ended by Harvard with a score of 6-1. "I thought it went extremely well for this point in the season," Captain Holden Spaht '96 said. Particularly impressive was the shutout victory against Yale, a win in which the Big Green did not drop a single set. "In all my years of coaching, I never remember beating Yale that badly," Coach Chuck Kinyon said. In the win over Yale, the Big Green stormed out of the gates by sweeping all three doubles matches.

Volleyball suffers tough losses

The streak could not last forever. After winning eight of its last nine games, the women's volleyball went 0-2 this past weekend. The team fell to defending Ivy League champion Princeton and to the University of Pennsylvania, dropping Dartmouth's record to 10-5 for the season. "I think this weekend was a very good learning experience for the team," Captain Carmen Schmitt said. On Friday night, the Tigers pounced upon the Big Green and took three consecutive games, 9-15, 5-15, 5-15. Princeton's outside hitter Ayesha Attoh tallied 11 kills for her team to help propel the Tigers to victory. On the other side of the net, outside hitter Alison McKinley '99 and setter Felicity Kolp '99 maintained Dartmouth's game.
