Men's soccer loses to Cornell in overtime

A 1-0 double overtime loss at Cornell on Sunday gave the men's soccer team its fourth-straight one goal loss and ended any aspirations the team may have had for the Ivy League crown. The loss, which was the Big Green's third straight Ivy League defeat, dropped the team to 2-11 overall and 1-3 in Ivy League play.

Big Green squashes Colgate in Homecoming game

Neither the rain nor the 25 mph gusts of wind could stop the fate of the swamp fest Saturday at Memorial Field, as the Dartmouth football team added its own version of Big Green celebration on the centennial anniversary of Dartmouth weekend. Dartmouth, now 4-2 on the year, attacked early and decisively against a smaller and younger Colgate team, in the midst of its worst record [0-7] in school history. The Big Green built a 35-0 half-time lead and then coasted the rest of the way to take the Homecoming victory, and a little sweet revenge from the Red Raiders of Colgate, to the tune of a 35-14 shellacking in front of 6,021 drenched fans. Rugby club clinches New England title

The Men's Rugby team wrapped up its defense of the New England Division I Championship with a Homecoming victory over Harvard on Saturday. Along with the repeat title, the team improved to 6-0, extending a streak of 15 regular season wins stretching back to 1993 and guaranteeing themselves a first round home game in the Northeastern Rugby Union playoffs. Harvard gave the Green the challenge that was expected from the traditional rivalry.

Big Green defense unstoppable

The Dartmouth football team has had its share of ups and downs this year, but one stabilizing force for the Big Green has been their defense. While the offense, which has been a mix of different quarterbacks, a new running back and an injured receiver has proven to be inconsistent at times, the Dartmouth defense has undoubtedly led this Big Green squad to a its current winning record. "There is really good chemistry between everyone," co-Captain Taran Lent '96 said.

Women's crew prepares for Charles

As the minds of many at Dartmouth are focused this week on the excitement of homecoming weekend, the women of Dartmouth crew have been excitedly gearing up for the Head of the Charles Regatta, which will take place this Sunday on the famous Charles River in Boston. The Big Green plan to enter boats in both the champ eight and the youth eight categories.

Zach Walz '98, a defensive line backer on the Big Green football squad proved through his performance last weekend at Yale to be a force to be reckoned with, making him this week's Athlete of the Week. Walz led the Dartmouth defense with five tackles, three of which dropped the Bulldogs for losses.

Women's soccer falls to UMASS

The women's soccer team played a gritty game yesterday afternoon against the University of Massachusetts, which is ranked thirteenth in the nation, but the Big Green fell just short falling to the Minutewomen 1-0. After coming off a weekend win against Princeton, Dartmouth was looking to find the momentum it has been lacking so far this season, but was unable to capitalize offensively. "I felt we had a few good chances," Coach Steve Swanson said.

Crew finishes first; prepares for Charles

The Big Green men's heavyweight crew team overcame a blunder, that cost them nearly two boat lengths to the entire field, and came from behind to win the Bausch & Lomb Invitational Regatta in Rochester, New York last Sunday. The mistake came early in the race when one of the Dartmouth's oars got caught up in the choppy water and brought the boat to a near stand still.

Cross country falters slightly

Dartmouth could not repeat its championship performance from last season this past weekend at the New England Collegiate Championships but ran well enough to place second in the meet. Providence College gained the championship team title as well as the first two spots in the individual results. "We felt we did really well," co-Captain Jack Dwyer '96 said. Providence is really strong." Dwyer finished first for Dartmouth and third overall running four seconds behind the first place runner, World Championship finalist Mark Carroll of Providence.

Women's golf places third in Invitational

Having a week off from competition seems to have been a very good thing for the women's golf team, as the Big Green came back from the break and posted some sizzling numbers at the Mount Holyoke Invitational this past Friday and Saturday. The Big Green took third place on the course of Mount Holyoke, shooting 331 on both days for a total of 662.

Basketball starts fall practice

For Matt Bush '96, a chem major, formulas and equations are no problem. As co-captain of the men's basketball team, Bush feels Dartmouth has all the chemistry of a championship team. "Our goal this year is to win the Ivy League," Bush said. The Big Green began their quest with a three hour practice on Sunday.

Big Green pounds Yale 21-7

The Dartmouth football team continued to be full of surprises at Yale on Saturday, thrashing the Bulldogs at the Yale Bowl, 22-7 in front of a crowd of 14,729 spectators. The Big Green football squad, now 3-2, loves to make things interesting.
