While most students were away from campus enjoying the final days of summer vacation, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team hit the court and racked up a very successful 8-2 record. Captain Jessie Hartman '11 was excited about how the team started its Fall.

As NCAA commercials constantly remind ESPN viewers, most college athletes "go pro" in something other than sports.
The ink was barely dry on his Dartmouth diploma when former Dartmouth football captain Pete Pidermann '10 headed across the Atlantic Ocean to follow his passion for football.

After 10 years of intercollegiate coaching experience and a stint training with the U.S. Rowing national team, Andrew Hilton '99 is returning to his alma mater to coach the Big Green's freshman heavyweight crew team. Under the guidance of heavyweight head coach Topher Bordeau and former freshman coach Eric Kratochvil, the crew program has gained a "new energy," Hilton said. "I feel really privileged to be coming on board at this time," he said. Kratochvil left the team at the start of the month to pursue a new career, according to Bordeau. Hilton, who has coached at Deerfield Academy and at several universities including Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley brings experience on both sides of the recruiting process. Hilton has worked in programs at varying levels of competition, which will be advantageous as Dartmouth strives to become even more competitive, Bordeau said. Wisconsin is a program that largely develops talent, Bordeau explained, while U.C.

Courtesy of DartmouthSports.com Courtesy of DartmouthSports.com After spending three years "giving back to soccer" both abroad and at home, former All-Ivy defender Lucas Richardson '07 will return to the College this fall as assistant coach for the men's soccer team, head coach Jeffrey Cook announced last Wednesday. A four-year standout on the pitch, Richardson was named All-Ivy during his sophomore and junior seasons.
Because Dartmouth is one of the only schools that requires the entire sophomore class to be on campus for the summer, there isn't much happening as far as sporting events go, except for all the "unofficial" practices and workout sessions held weekly for the varsity athletes. After Tubestock was ended in 2006, the College established Fieldstock as one of the biggest competitions of the summer. But when I was asking people what Fieldstock actually was I heard everything from "Wait, what is Fieldstock?" to "It's just for everyone to relax and have a good time." I've figured out so far that the College decided to try to make an amped up carnival for students. "I'm excited to see how it will turn out since it's one of Dartmouth's newer traditions," Jill Cohen '12 said. Nonetheless, whether you have been waiting to stuff your face full of peanut butter at the eating competition or relive Freshman Orientation by capturing the melon, Fieldstock has something for everyone. Fieldstock kicked off with a carnival on Frat Row on Wednesday.
I sat down with Kevin O'Brien '12, a goalie on the men's soccer team, to discuss the lifestyle and the mentality of a backup athlete at Dartmouth. Describe the lifestyle of a backup goalie. KO: The other goalies and I go about each practice with the same mentality and work to compete at the highest level with the field players.

Now that it is officially August (I know, I don't know where the Summer term went either), I can finally start looking ahead to a cherished Dartmouth activity that has been severely lacking this term varsity sports. But, should you question which sporting games are worth your time and body heat while you cheer on your fellow students this fall, I will now provide you with the "Who's Who" of this fall's athletes to watch. First up, Dartmouth football. Defensive end Charles Bay '11 and wide receiver Tim McManus '11 will lead this year's Big Green team to what will hopefully be a better result than last year's 2-8 record, and they certainly have the capability to do so. Five members of last year's team were named to 2010 Preseason All-Ivy first and second teams, including wide receiver Tanner Scott '11 and running back Nick Schwieger '12 for the offensive roster.
