A Call for Full Disclosure

|

To the Editor: President Wright was quoted Wednesday ("Wright comments on Zete derecognition," May 4) as expounding onthe College Counsel's assertion ("Free Speech and its Limits," April 18) that Wright's letters to the community regarding the 2001 Zeta Psi fraternity incident merely constituted his opinion.

Breaking the Bubble

It's senior spring. The weather's a little bit warmer, the classes are a little bit easier and the alcohol is a little bit more plentiful.

Sustainability saves money

|

To the Editor: I've been disappointed in the vocal and narrow-minded responses to Dartmouth's decision to hire a sustainability director that have been published lately. Susan Noel ("Sustainability Director a Joke," May 3) and Randall McFarlane ("Maybe a Budget Director, Instead...," May 4) both assume that Dartmouth is throwing its money away by hiring Jim Merkel.

It's All Up to the Players

Can any of us remember when steroids were not the major topic of any baseball conversation? It has been a while since the grand jury testimonies of Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi were leaked to the public, and even longer since I first wrote a column about the steroid scandal.

(Un)separating the trustee candidates

|

To the Editor: "Wright Comments on Zete Derecognition" incorrectly (and in my view, unfairly) separates the views of two alumni candidates from the rest of the candidates in the ongoing Board of Trustees election (May 4). The article begins by immediately creating a distinction between the current administration (namely, President Wright) and two of the trustee candidates, Todd Zywicki '88 and Peter Robinson '79.

Worthy of Fair Debate

|

To the Editor, In his op-ed ("Worthy of Debate," May 2), Jonathan Wisniewski, a conservative, asks us to take conservative arguments seriously and debate issues instead of simply taking the "liberal" line.

Opinion

Maybe a Budget Director, Instead...

|

To the Editor: I'm shaking my head in despair over the news that Dartmouth is hiring a "Sustainability Director." I would hope that, with students unable to be certain of their living arrangements or of their ability to take needed courses, the College would prioritize its spending in a more intelligent manner.

Opinion

Playing with the Numbers

|

To the Editor: I was surprised to hear the statistic cited in Jen Garfinkel's article ("Grabowski lectures on sexuality, Catholic doctrine," May 2) that "family planning" was 98 percent effective against unwanted pregnancies, compared with 92 percent for oral contraceptives and 80 percent for condoms. If one examines the current publication from the World Health Organization about the failure rates of various birth control methods, one can see how Grabowski manipulates his numbers.

Right of Refusal?

|

When Ariel Sharon first became Prime Minister of Israel, I expected that he would have both the courage and fortitude to bully the professional political hacks of the Knesset into a peace process and into dismantling the settlements.

Opinion

Commercial College Radio?

|

To the Editor: The story on Dartmouth TV and Dartmouth Broadcasting was fascinating ("Armed with $400, DTV battles to find audience, April 28). The juxtaposition between community programming and commercial media enterprise is interesting for two reasons.

Opinion

Sustainability Director a Joke

|

To the Editor: I read with amusement your article on Dartmouth's creation of a "sustainability director" ("Merkel appointed first sustainability director," April 27). Is this a joke?

Garbage In, Garbage Out

|

Turn on your television. If you flip to a news channel, you'll probably see Bill O'Reilly or Bill Maher complaining about something. If you're hardy enough to make it to the 7 o'clock news, you're likely to see stories about household items that could be deadly, a murder or two and perhaps a drug bust. Who cares if there's a bill passed to cut funding to welfare?

Help End Animal Suffering

|

Though Earth Day has come and gone, we can still examine our impact on the planet and make personal resolutions to help make the environment cleaner and improve the treatment of animals.

Opinion

Liberal Hypocrisy

|

In 1994, professor and literary critic Stanley Fish told the world that, "There is no such thing as free speech, and it's a good thing too." He argued that the "free speech" label is and always has been a political tool used for the purposes of advancing an individual or a group agenda.

The Wrong Priorities

I'll start with a thought exercise: you are the owner of a widget store. For years and years, the golden widget has been one of your most popular products.

Opinion

99 Rocks

|

When I agreed to do an interview for The Dartmouth concerning 99 Rock, I was thrilled that we at WFRD might get some recognition from a student body that doesn't even know we broadcast from Robinson Hall ("Armed with $400, DTV battles to find audience," April 28). I spent a chunk of time talking with the reporter and gave a huge amount of factual information, in addition to conveying my own experiences as a DJ and as the current FM Program Director.
