Profs. demand details of budget breakdown

The resolution requiring the College to publicize a report of the measures taken to close the College's $100-million budget gap since 2009, which was unanimously passed at Monday's Faculty of the Arts and Sciences meeting, has the potential to strengthen the relationship between administrators and faculty members and encourage administrative transparency, according to various professors interviewed by The Dartmouth. Native American studies and anthropology professor Sergei Kan, who has taught at the College since 1989, said the decision marked the first time in his memory that faculty had passed a resolution with "one voice." Religion professor Ronald Green, who proposed the resolution, said he first asked the administration for a detailed report of the distribution of the budget cuts at a Feb.

New course teaches sign language

While some may learn French or Spanish in college, a class new to the College Courses department this spring has given a group of students the opportunity to learn to speak and translate American Sign Language and meet with the nation's top deaf poets and performers, while attending lectures by music professor Larry Polansky.

Broderick discusses leadership traits

Dani Wang / The Dartmouth Staff Drawing from his experiences working with former President Bill Clinton and current Vice President Joe Biden, former New Hampshire Chief Justice John Broderick described empathy and selflessness as key elements of leadership in a lecture Friday afternoon at the Rockefeller Center. Broderick, who was chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 2004 to 2010 and currently serves as dean and president of the University of New Hampshire School of Law, said that although leadership requirements vary based on the position, the best leaders establish and maintain their tight relationships with their constituents. "In my opinion, leadership is never about you," he said.
