SSWS marches for staff benefits

AKI ONDA / The Dartmouth Senior Staff Students and staff members chanted, "Dartmouth is no corporation" and "Health care is a human right" as they circled Parkhurst Hall on Friday afternoon, insisting that the administration halt the subcontracting of College jobs and restore staff health care benefits, which were reduced by $15 million in January 2011 as part of the College's $100-million budget cuts. Approximately 70 people attended the 30-minute protest organized by Dartmouth Students Stand with Staff.

Five health care sites comprising the New Hampshire Accountable Care Organization pilot program, a health care system designed to increase cost efficiency, received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on May 20, according to Foster's Daily Democrat.

Souba revitalizes DMS curriculum

|

Lotta Nygren / The Dartmouth In his first year as dean of Dartmouth Medical School, Wiley Souba made efforts to "revitalize" DMS' curriculum through a dual degree program and focused on enhancing the relationship between the medical school, the College and other graduate schools, Souba said in an interview with The Dartmouth. Through the implementation of new programs and partnerships with the College, Souba hopes to make DMS the most "prestigious" and "unique" medical school in the country, DMS Associate Dean and Chief Operating Officer Charles Mannix said. By working closely with College President Jim Yong Kim, Provost Carol Folt and various deans, Souba has forged "cross-institutional" links such as a joint bioengineering program with Thayer School of Engineering, according to Mannix.

Experts assess recent alcohol collaborative

While various organizations and experts that focus on addressing underage drinking have praised Dartmouth's newly announced Learning Collaborative on High-Risk Drinking, some question how the initiative will work with current campaigns to promote alcohol safety and whether the initiative's members possess the requisite experience needed to successfully address underage drinking on college campuses. The College announced on May 2 that it would to collaborate with 13 other colleges and universities on a new initiative to address alcohol use on campuses across the country, The Dartmouth previously reported. Various public health officials interviewed by The Dartmouth agree that the Collaborative represents a positive step in addressing on-campus alcohol issues.

The Women in Science Project, founded in 1990, celebrated its 20th anniversary last Thursday and Friday with various events including an alumnae panel, a mentoring workshop and a student poster symposium, according to Assistant Dean of Faculty for Undergraduate Research and WISP Director Margaret Funnell.
