Ted Baehr ’69 reviews movies for moral value

|

Ted Baehr ’69 is founder and chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission, a non-profit that lobbies the entertainment industry to produce content aligned with Christian teachings. He is also publisher of Movieguide, a magazine affiliated with the Christian Film and Television Commission that features original reviews for movies and television shows based on their moral and Biblical content. Baehr, who studied comparative literature at the College and received a law degree from the New York University School of Law, has written several books on the subject of American mass media and Christian values.

Student Spotlight: Phoebe Bodurtha '15

Phoebe Bodurtha ’15 brought the 2014 Dartmouth Idol audience to a roar when she sang “Defying Gravity,” from the Broadway hit “Wicked,” at the show’s finale. Nabbing a first-place finish was no feat of luck. Bodurtha has sung since middle school and had performed in Idol twice before.

Mandel confirms "house system" in campus-wide email

The new system will allow students to live in a designated residential cluster after freshman year. Currently, students spend their first three terms on a dedicated freshman floor and then choose upper-class housing through a lottery system, often moving each term.

College releases proposal for new sexual assault policy

|

Students found guilty of sexual assault involving penetration, oral-genital contact or oral-anal contact after use of force, threat or purposeful incapacitation of a survivor, as well as students motivated by bias or with prior records of sexual assault who commit these acts, would be expelled from the College if a proposed disciplinary policy is enacted.

Trustees approve slight tuition increase, support harsher sexual assault sanctions

The College’s Board of Trustees voted Saturday to increase tuition, room, board and mandatory fees by 2.9 percent to $61,947 for the 2014-15 academic year, the lowest percentage increase since 1977, and elected Bill Helman ’80 as the Board’s next chair. At the meeting, trustees expressed unanimous support for a proposal to strengthen sanctions for students found guilty of sexual assault.

Professors express concern with sexual assault initiatives

Since Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson announced of the creation of the Center for Community Action and Prevention in early February, a group of professors have renewed their call for an independent review of campus climate at Dartmouth and increased transparency in the administration’s decision-making process.

College responds to 'Freedom Budget'

College President Phil Hanlon and Interim Provost Martin Wybourne released a statement Thursday night responding to the “Freedom Budget” and outlining plans for increased diversity at the College, including changes to financial aid and programs to bring “diverse perspectives” to campus.

Gilbert trial to begin March 17

|

The trial of Parker Gilbert ’16 is scheduled to begin on March 17 and last for around two weeks, according to a court assistant at the Grafton County Superior Court. The Court held jury selection on Monday morning, at which time the dates for the case were finalized.

Panhell increases dues scholarships by $1,200

|

This spring, the Panhellenic Council will bolster its scholarship program, increasing available funding from $800 to $2,000. The scholarship aims to ease the financial burden that Panhell sorority dues impose and assist women who feel inhibited from joining a sorority for financial reasons.

Morano Gelato to add locations

After four years of serving fresh, homemade gelato to Hanover residents and Dartmouth students, Morano Gelato aims to expand out from the Upper Valley to the Boston area. Owner and founder Morgan Morano has decided to franchise the business. She hopes to open two stores by March 2015 and at least 10 stores nationwide over the next five years, starting with the Boston area.
