The Galleria retail building on South Main Street, which has been nearly empty for the past two years, will receive a vital infusion of new business in the next few months. The Board of Trustees arrives in Hanover today for what should be a quiet weekend of meetings, College spokesman Roland Adams said. "A lot of the agenda is going to be informational," Adams said. He said the Board will convene several meetings with students and committees to learn about the status of the College to prepare the Board for the rest of the academic year. "This is going to be the Board's first regularly scheduled meeting since June -- making it the first of the current academic year," Adams said. Dylan Karczewski '99, a 180- pound, 6-0' tailback, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for his efforts against Columbia last weekend as he helped the Big Green overcome the Lions 43-27. Karczewski scored his first two touchdowns of his collegiate career on runs from four and eight yards.
Sunday night's debate between leading conservative intellectual Dinesh D'Souza '83 and GovernmentProfessor Roger Masters provided an example of the potential for productive public discourse at Dartmouth. Masters and D'Souza faced off on whether racism is a big problem in American, an issue that affects every member of the Dartmouth Community.
In the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll, which was conducted among 16 members of the media, the Dartmouth men's and women's basketball were ranked second for the 1995-96 season. The picks came as little surprise for Dartmouth supporters since the men, third last year in the Ivy League, have a strong core of returning players, while the women, last year's Ivy Champions, are known for their annually strong teams. The poll was released in time for the Ivy League conference call yesterday afternoon in which Ivy League men's and women's basketball coaches shared their brief outlooks for the upcoming season.
For Carmen Harden '96 and Natalyn Nails '96, asking eager high school students questions like "What have you tried and failed at?" is a daily routine. Harden and Nails are two of the College's 16 senior interviewers, who work part-time as the student liaisons for the College's extensive admissions team, interviewing about 12 to 15 prospective students each week. In addition to the 16 part-time interviewers the College employees during the regular school year, the admissions office hires five students to serve as full-time senior interviewers over the summer. Nails said she worked as a full-time interviewer last summer. "The full-time position involved more than just interviewing prospective candidates," Nails said.
Dartmouth's Montgomery Fellow for the Fall term and Russian intellectual Vyacheslav Ivanov will present a lecture on the life and writings of Mikhail Bakhtin in Sanborn today at 4 p.m. Bakhtin, a Russian philosopher and literary scholar, was called an "exceptional figure both for his human qualities and scholarly ideas" by Ivanov in a recent press release. According to Ivanov, Bhaktin's belief that genuine dialogue was essential to the health of a culture has particular meaning in the polarized politics of the times.
Plans call for the $2.85 million upgrade to start early next year
Hanover Police is still investigating how John Coleman '98 received extensive head wounds that caused him to bleed profusely early Saturday morning, and have not ruled out the possibility that he was involved in a fight. Although Hanover Police Detective Sergeant Frank Moran said there currently is no evidence that Coleman was involved in an "altercation," he said "there is still some degree of mystery with regard to what happened." "We're not sure if he could have been in an altercation or if he just fell," Moran said.

After an Ivy Championship last year, the Big Green looks to repeat
Coed Fraternity Sorority Council President Matt Raben '96 and Assistant Dean of Residential Life Deb Reinders last night presented the third annual 15 Webster Avenue Award to the sisters of Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority and the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. The 15 Webster Avenue Award goes to the Greek organization whose proposal for community service is judged to be the most worthy of a $2,000 grant from the 15 Webster Avenue Fund. Sig Ep and Theta submitted a proposal to "work together in order to provide greater service to the surrounding communities" by building a jungle gym for the Family Place, a non-profit, parent-child center located in White River Junction, Vt. The committee that decides the award is comprised of Raben, Reinders, Dean of Residential Life Mary Turco, a member from each Greek sub-council and a member of the Greek Advisory Group. Suzanne Leonard '96, Theta's service chair, submitted the proposal to the committee.
