Just as the popularity of women's hockey keeps augmenting, so do the awards for Big Green forward Sarah Hood '98. Last week, Hood was named to both the first-ever American Women's College Hockey Alliance (AWCHA) All-American squad along with the 1997-98 New England Hockey Writers All-Star team.

In the aftermath of the past weekend's Ivy opening debacle, the Big Green baseball team seemingly needs to find answers to what went so wrong on their journey to Cornell and Princeton. More importantly, sitting in last place in the Red Rolfe Division three games behind Harvard, Yale and Brown, Dartmouth must find those answers quickly before Columbia and Penn roll into town on Friday for the second Ivy weekend of the 1998 campaign.

Dartmouth's bid to win back-to-back games for the first time this year was shattered by Providence College as the Friars beat the Big Green, 7-3, in Providence yesterday. The second game of the doubleheader was played to a scoreless tie and was called because of darkness.

The Big Green baseball team begins their quest for an Ivy League title when they open up league play at Cornell and Princeton this weekend. Dartmouth enters the weekend fresh off of a 12-4 drubbing of Tufts which improved their record to 11-2 on the season.

After a strong start to the season, the Dartmouth pitching staff got a rude awakening yesterday as they got battered for 10 runs and five homers in a 10-7 loss at Babson College. The loss ended the Big Green's win streak at nine games after the team had raced out to its best start in 40 years.

While the skies may be clear and sunny in Hanover currently, the ski team is still experiencing showers of their own in the form of NCAA awards resulting from their performance at the NCAA Skiing Championships held in Bozeman, Mont. over the break. The Big Green put together a strong team effort, finishing seventh overall in the competition.

The Big Green, who earned an at-large bid to the 32-team field, will host Boston University Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Chase Field.

After two successful seasons, the men's and women's rugby clubs faced off in their respective playoffs over the weekend. The men earned a key victory over Norwich, 59-12, to propel them into the final round of the Northeast playoffs next week in Albany. The women's club fared just as well, taking second place in the Northeastern tournament at Boston. Their finish earned them a spot at Nationals in the spring.

What a difference two weeks makes. Sitting at 5-0 and on a 22-game unbeaten streak, the Columbia game was circled as the opportunity to break Penn's Division I-AA record unbeaten streak of 24 games. Now, after consecutive drubbings at the hands of Lehigh and Harvard on Memorial Field, the Big Green bring their tattered reputation and season to New York in desperate search of a win to keep their Ivy title hopes alive.

The Dartmouth women's soccer team had a very up and down weekend, losing a tight overtime game that they probably shouldn't have even been in and winning a tight contest that could have been a blowout.

Dartmouth enters tomorrow's contest against Lehigh with one last chance to play a complete game before entering the heart of their Ivy League schedule which begins with Harvard next weekend. Although Lehigh enters the game at 2-4, the 5-0 Big Green will be challenged to extend their nation-best unbeaten streak to 23 games as the Engineers bring one of the most potent offenses in Division I-AA to Memorial Field. However, accompanying that potent offense is a defense that is giving up 465 yards per game which should give Pete Sellers '98 and company a chance to move to ball with efficiency. Furthermore, Lehigh is only 1-3 this year on the road while Dartmouth salivates at the thought of coming home to play four of their final five games in the friendly confines of Hanover.

The Big Green field hockey team posted its first victory of the year playing in the middle of the week, dumping the University of Vermont 2-0 on Chase Field. The win was the second in a row for the stickers and was the first time Dartmouth posted back-to-back wins first since the Big Green defeated Towson and Pennsylvania five weeks ago in their first games of the season.

Five wins, no losses. Unbeaten in Ivy League play. After their 21-7 win at Yale on Saturday, the Big Green sit in much the same position as last year's squad did after five games. However, this team claims that they want their own reputation to stand on, that they don't want to be compared to last year's team. Fortunately for Dartmouth, the comparison to last year's perfect team rages only in the standings.
