Directors of bloody flicks like Blade II and Hannibal may be reaching a younger audience than they anticipate, as Dartmouth Medical School researchers have found that an average of 12.5 percent of children ages 10 to 14 have seen movies rated R for violence by the Motion Picture Association of America. The team found that exposure to "extremely violent" movies was linked to heritage, education and socioeconomic background.

Dieters may start examining their choice of friends in addition to their choice of food, according to a recent study co-authored by Dartmouth economics professor David Blanchflower. The study revealed that perceptions about weight and weight's effect on happiness are linked to a person's body mass index, a measure of weight scaled by height, relative to that of his or her peers.

Hey, before you sign a year-long lease to the Love Shack, listen up! Sure, off campus housing may seem sweet, but dude, step back. Breathe. Look at yourself in the mirror.

Three Dartmouth professors were appointed to endowed chairs on June 25, Vox of Dartmouth reported on July 21. Professor William Wohlforth was named the Daniel Webster Professor of Government and Jonathan Crewe, professor of English and comparative literature, was appointed as the Leon D. Black Professor in Shakespearean Studies. Professor Nancy Marion became the first George J. Record 1956 Professor in Economics, a chair established by a donation from the Record family. According to the Dean of the Faculty Office, the professors were selected for the positions after recommendation by the Dean of the Faculty and approval by the Committee Advisory to the President and the Board of Trustees. Crewe said he anticipated that his appointment would direct him to focus on Shakespeare more in his own work and in his teaching. "It's almost impossible to do research that doesn't immediately feed back into the classroom," he said.

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center will require criminal background checks and drug tests for potential new employees beginning Sept. 1, the Valley News reported Thursday. DHMC adopted these regulations to match the policies of other hospitals nationwide, John Elliot, DHMC's director of employment and recruitment, told the Valley News. According to Elliot, the drug testing will be performed in-house, while the criminal background checks, which will go back seven to 10 years, will be performed by an outside company. DHMC officials will decide whether to offer positions to candidates who have criminal convictions on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the offense.

Take legit classes during sophomore summer? Why? Not only would you miss massive facetime in Astro 3, you'd also be utterly confused by Sig Ep party blitzes referencing some guy named "Professor Ulrich." Plus, actually working may conflict with key rope-swing-jumping-off hours, or result in you missing out on the invaluable experience of bonding with your sweaty classmates in a 118 degree basement.

Ah, sophomore summer. Warm days, shirtless frisbee players on the Green, vaguely "summerish"-themed tails with the normal amount of alcohol and a quarter of the people ... what more do you need? The more romantically minded would tell you that a steady boyfriend or girlfriend might complete the picture, but there is a major consideration they forget: Dartmouth is not designed for dating. What's a group of about 1,000 (somewhat) nubile young co-eds marooned in the boonies for the summer to do?

Miscommunication over the latest updates to the pay system of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center has caused tension between the employees and managers of DHMC, the Valley News reported on Wednesday. Anonymous employees told the Valley News that DHMC had informed them in March that they would receive pay raises based solely on merit, rather than receiving their normal annual cost-of-living increase. According to DHMC officials, however, the center has not given workers across-the-board salary increases in at least 15 years and has always used a performance- based system when awarding raises, the Valley News said. Hospital spokesman Jason Aldous said changes were made to the pay system, but that previous media stories had incorrectly characterized the revisions as a fundamentally different approach, the Valley News reported. DHMC did not attempt to correct the public record because officials had planned to explain the issue to staff internally, officials told the Valley News.

An unidentified group posing as the "Dartmouth Team" sent e-mails to approximately 1,000 BlitzMail users Monday evening, asking recipients to confirm their e-mail usernames and passwords. The e-mails were likely an attempt to gain unauthorized access to users' Dartmouth Name Directory login information, according to College computing representatives, but only a "handful" of the targeted recipients gave out personal information. Kiewit Computing has since changed the passwords of all affected users.

Just being connected to the internet can allow a computer to be infiltrated by hackers who can then steal personal information stored on the hard drive or slow the computer to a crawl.
