Dorm rooms — those special little sanctuaries with filled-to-the-brim trash cans, leftover EBAs boxes on top of your bed, everything you've worn this week piled on the floor next to your grimy frat shoes. No, this was not the reality that Jasmine wanted to create for herself. This spring, finally in the single of her dreams (just kidding — it’s in Topliff) with a huge closet that could finally fit her clothes and shoes, she sought to make the room a manifestation of her wonderful personality. She stole lots of Indian trinkets from her family home and hung them up as wall displays. She fashioned a hip chai table complete with mugs and a tea kettle next to her bed. Who knew the chill and clean vibe would be ruined one day when Jasmine caught the stomach bug and barfed all over the carpet, leaving permanent unsightly stains. She is currently looking for a room change for the summer.

Wednesday night Jasmine went to a Cords show where she heard the song that would revolutionize her Thursday. As she sat on the sticky first floor of Psi U, she heard lyrics that touched her very deeply. “And when you say you won’t forget me / Well I can tell you that’s untrue / ’cause every day since you left me / I've thought less and less of you.” Damn, she thought. So indignant, dismissive and a little bitchy as well. And so she listened to “Changing of the Seasons” by the Two Door Cinema Club as soon as she got back to her dorm that night. She listened to it until she fell asleep. She listened to it on the way to her x-hour the next morning. She listened to it heading up the stairs to The D’s office to work on The Mirror.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP STRESS
(04/10/14 8:09pm)
Jasmine would like to consider herself a civically responsible citizen who probably cares too much. Apathy is not something she battles with often. In high school, she voted in every election that she was allowed to participate in. The first three years of high school, she ran for three different student government positions, seduced by the promise of power. She lost all three elections, but found solace by remembering that Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school basketball team. As a Dartmouth student, she has voted in every student government election in addition to tabling for and voting in the 2012 general election.

COLLIS PORCH FACETIME

Home is a fluid concept for college students. There’s the home you grew up in — the family, the friends, the middle school teachers you make small talk with in the grocery store. Then there’s your college campus — your freshmen floormates, FoCo, the library at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday night. The third metaphysical sense of home, that sentimental feeling of belonging — well, who knows where that is?

When we were approached to be this spring’s Mirror editors, we panicked. Neither of us had much experience with The Mirror. One of us (you have a 50-50 shot at guessing!) had never actually opened an issue of The Mirror before.
