The humble origins of celebratory bonfires at Dartmouth began with a baseball victory over Manchester College in 1888. After the win, students collected whatever flammable material they could find and used it to create a makeshift fire in the middle of the Green.

Ever write a paper on a short deadline? Say, pull an all-nighter before stumbling to class, bleary-eyed, to turn in a 10-page term paper, then pass out on the desk in front of your disappointed teacher? I know I have. Or how about writing a sports column at 8 a.m. on a Wednesday morning to meet a Wednesday afternoon deadline without missing any of your classes? No? Well, let me tell you, it sucks. I don't think my humor muscles work this early in the morning.

For the first time that I can remember, last Tuesday's Panhellenic Council dug into some serious issues currently affecting our campus community. Starting with a tense discussion on the failures of this year's sorority bid night, the meeting evolved into a candid conversation about organizations at Dartmouth, our relationship with the administration, our roles in the broader community, and the disparate regulations imposed on sororities and fraternities. We ladies are up in arms, and frat boys should be, too. In fact, the entire campus should be concerned; the student-vs.-administration battle has gone far enough, and it is time that we take responsibility for ourselves.

A strong showing by a country's national soccer team can result in an improved economy, according to a recent study by the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London. The Centre's study mirrors conclusions drawn in a U.S. report produced by members of the Dartmouth community and academics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last year. The Centre created the report after gathering research in Germany during this past summer's World Cup. Based on phone interviews with over 3,000 citizens conducted the day after Germany's game, researchers found that Germany's unexpected good play produced improved economic perceptions. Though the German economy saw little change throughout the tournament, citizens reported that the economy was improving and that their personal wealth was expanding. Since the end of the World Cup, the German economy has improved -- retail sales have grown, unemployment has fallen, and the country's economy is predicted to see its fastest growth rate since 2000.
