Rugby keeps season rolling with 45-0 shellacking of Brown

The Big Green dominated virtually every facet of their contest against Brown. The victory has hopes running high for Saturday's match, when Dartmouth will take on Harvard with a playoff berth on the line.
The Big Green dominated virtually every facet of their contest against Brown. The victory has hopes running high for Saturday's match, when Dartmouth will take on Harvard with a playoff berth on the line.

The Dartmouth men came out hungry for a resounding win but were initially slowed by a number of handling errors. Led by forwards Kemper Pierce '08, Andy Mackin '07 and John Wilkens '06, Dartmouth delivered several big hits in the early minutes to set the tone for the rest of the contest.

Dartmouth opened up the scoring in the 15th minute as captain Tom Manzo '07 hit co-captain Aziz Sayigh '07, who sliced through the Brown side, pushing ahead for a 60-meter line-break. As he was being tackled, he made a pass to Josh Weinberg '07, who finished off the last ten meters for Dartmouth's first five points. The conversion failed, making the score 5-0.

Just seven minutes later, the Big Green struck again. After a short line-break and ruck, Manzo found flyhalf Conlan O'Leary '09, who drew several defenders before dishing to a crashing Paul Huelskamp '06, who touched down for the score. Jeff Kolovson '09 nailed the conversion to give the Big Green a 12-0 lead midway through the half. Soon after though, Kolovson went down with an ankle injury.

"I just want to recover as quickly as possible in order to help the team win," Kolovson said. "I want to work hard and make the older guys like Josh Weinberg proud of me."

Before the half, the Green managed to tally again; this time in moving forward off a scrum about 40 meters out. John Wilkens '06 found Sayigh, who juked and pushed ahead for a line-break and a try of his own to further increase Dartmouth's advantage. Dave Chattman '08 hit the conversion to make the mark 19-0.

The scoring continued in the second half as several different Dartmouth players managed to get in on the action. First was flanker Mackin, who caught a dish from Manzo and went 40 meters for the score, making the tally 26-0 in favor of the men in green.

Ten minutes later, wing Jake Pawlowski '08 got on the board, catching a pass from O'Leary and taking it 20 meters to put Dartmouth up 31-0. O'Leary then made an opportunity for himself as he took the ball following a Josh Ring '08 line-break and weaved upfield by himself, scoring directly under the posts. A successful conversion by Drew Jennings '08 made the score 38-0.

With 12 minutes to go, Dartmouth would tally its seventh and final try as O'Leary initiated the attack again, finding a charging Huelskamp for his second try of the day. After a conversion by Pawlowski, Dartmouth's lead had ballooned to 45 points.

Captain Tom Manzo said the win represented a solid step forward for the team.

"Beating a fellow Ivy League team always feels good," Manzo said. "It lets us know that amongst the privileged and bookish boys of the Ivy League, we are the most agile, rugged and manly."

The second XV continued their dominance of the Northeast with another resounding victory, beating the Brown second side 43-12 with great play from a wide range of underclassman leaders.

The Dartmouth men will be in action this weekend as they take on Harvard on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on Brophy Field.
