It is undoubtedly frustrating to leave an institution such as the College in the midst of major change. Dartmouth has always changed and will continue to do so. But the changes facing the College at this time are perhaps the largest and most controversial since coeducation. Seniors will approach the elegant commencement stage today unsure of what exactly their new alma mater will be. What will the word "Dartmouth" mean to their employers or grandchildren?

I'm in sports writers purgatory. Graduation is still 16 days away, but today is the final newspaper edition of the spring. By the time you read this, I'll be unemployed. And there are no games to cover.

One of the things on everybody's mind lately is tradition. Many people feel that students are powerless to maintain tradition because of the impermanent nature of a student body at a four-year college. But there are permanent fixtures at this college. People that affect us every day of our college experience and have affected others for years before us.

Earlier this year, the Board of Trustees issued an unexpected set of five principles that would "characterize the future residential and social life of students at the College." Most students took this to mean that the precious Greek system was to go, and nearly every major national newspaper concurred. Headlines all over the nation hailed the end of fraternities at one of the country's oldest Greek institutions. Despite all the controversy over the future of Dartmouth's Greek system, the five principles addressed an equally important problem, one that could have more long-lasting effects than any other issue - that of residential life.

I'm almost done with my first year here atDartmouth. As I look back on a year that went by unbelievably quickly, I can say one thing with relative certainty: so far, I've had a pretty good time here despite all the administration's proposed "improvements." Maybe this year wasn't really the Dartmouth experience I had hoped for or expected, but it was a worthwhile one nonetheless.

Oh wait, they never showed up! All the people who wanted to come up with a vision, who admitted change was necessary and who said they were going to commit to thinking about and really changing Dartmouth ...what happened to all of you? I guess people forgot what their homework assignment was. This article is a response to Tuesday night's SA meeting, and is directed towards Greeks and non-Greeks who didn't vote to change the status quo. To all of you, what the hell are you doing? Are you really that happy with the status quo? Over the past term and a half these types of questions have surfaced over and over again. Our expectation - and certainly the expectations of professors, administrators and staff members - was that students would have thought long and hard about how to reshape the Dartmouth community. Don't get us wrong - there have been many excellent and creative ideas dealing with all aspects of the Trustees initiative, however, the status quo still seems to be the favored option.

Well everyone, it has been four years already. Can you believe it? Who would have imagined. Four long years. Four long, incredible years since they cancelled TV's Growing Pains. Or maybe it has been thirteen long, incredible years. I'm not exactly sure. I stopped keeping track around 1986.

This is a response both to the house editorial "But what do you really want?" (May 26th, Op-Ed), and to what I witnessed at the Student Assembly meeting on Tuesday night. In writing this, I can speak only for myself, not for my brothers, nor for any other working group chair.
