Let's Rethink COSO

(05/20/98 9:00am)

A few weeks ago, The Dartmouth reported that the Council on Student Organizations -- which many of us know simply as "COSO" -- was considering new standards for student publications, including a ban on anonymously printed submissions and warnings about article content. Over the past few terms, we've all heard about COSO meeting to consider allegedly racist pieces in the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern humor magazine and denying funding to Uncommon Threads for failing to submit its request on time.

Tori Amos toughens up with latest album

(05/19/98 9:00am)

In "Northern Lad," a winsome ballad off of Tori Amos' recently released fourth album, "From the Choirgirl Hotel," the flame-haired singer reflects on a nasty break-up and concludes: "I guess sometimes you go too far / When pianos try to be guitars." It's one of those bull's eye lyrics that Amos is so good at delivering, but critics will probably be more interested in the line's relation to the change in her music.

Track teams run into success

(05/19/98 9:00am)

For those track athletes that are headed to next week's championships, this past weekend served as excellent tuneup. For those athletes who concluded their season at the New England championships with strong performances, there are many positives to build on for next season. Perhaps the biggest winners of the weekend were the complete men's and women's squads, who jumped out to early leads and fought valiantly to land finishes in the top 10.

And Then There Were '02

(05/19/98 9:00am)

Well, not to make anyone feel inferior, but it seems that -- surprise! -- once again the incoming freshmen are the smartest, most talented people Dartmouth has ever amalgamated into one class. As The D would have noted in last Wednesday's article were the paper not already full of such earth-shattering signs of impending apocalypse as "Hanover approves new garage," members of the '02 class, according to the Admissions Office, "are just great people. They are all the valedictorians of their schools, even all 20 who came from Stuyvesant. They are all the authors of prize-winning novels, and they solve differential equations with a smaller expenditure of mental energy than you, upperclass retard, need to separate your dirty laundry.

Sinatra: the man, the legend, the final bow

(05/18/98 9:00am)

Whether it was crooning on stage with a smoke in one hand and a bottle of scotch in the other, or throwing patrons through plate glass windows at the Sands, Frank Sinatra (emphasis on the Sin-) personified style. Hoboken's son had flaws. Too much drink. Too many women. A volcanic temper. Excess.

'Horse Whisperer' is too quiet

(05/18/98 9:00am)

Robert Redford's film adaptation of Nicholas Evan's wildly popular bestseller "The Horse Whisperer" should have been released under a different title: "As Slow as It Gets." The film serves as a guide to the actor/director's obsessions -- all things western, all things sluggishly paced and himself.
