Especially for a school that prides itself so much on its communal spirit, Dartmouth's lack of a mascot is shameful. Harvard shares this distinction, and any similarities with that school should be setting off alarm bells. "Big Green" is really just as bad as "Crimson".

Kristin '10 commented on what she said were the prevailing attitudes towards women in Dartmouth culture. Kristin struggled to feel comfortable in her identity as a woman while serving as a coxswain for the men's lightweight crew during her four years at the College, she said.

Three weeks ago, for instance, I heard another tour guide say, "Dartmouth is like Disney World and Hogwarts, combined!" which is like calling Alcatraz an all-inclusive island resort. With this in mind I've compiled and translated a brief list of some things tour guides say as we amble backwards around the campus.

A string of controversies surrounding the University of North Dakota's choice of symbol forced the school to abandon its former emblem, the Figthing Sioux, on April 8, after using the tribe as its representative since the 1930s. UND's former Native American symbol caused controversy in Hanover in 2006 when Dartmouth, who also previously used an Indian as its moniker, played against the UND men's hockey team. Former Dartmouth's Athletic Director Josie Harper wrote a letter to The Dartmouth apologizing for allowing the Dartmouth men's hockey team to compete against UND after the game. In her letter, Harper wrote that allowing the Big Green to play the Fighting Sioux would "understandably offend and hurt people within our community".

Many people on campus have bandied about the phrase "social justice" over the past few weeks. But while opposition to employee layoffs has been open and vocal, there has been a mysterious silence from Parkhurst surrounding an incident that made a student feel unwelcome at Dartmouth.

In 1939, a 37-foot-tall version of College founder Eleazar Wheelock, the College's founder, towered over the Green, proudly wielding a 15-gallon beer mug. Sixty-five years later, students commemorated the 100th birthday of Theodore Geisel '25 by perching his Cat in the Hat atop a giant snow hat. Since its inception in 1925, the Winter Carnival snow sculpture on the Green has often drawn inspiration from the College's storied history, showcasing student sculptors' imaginative, ambitious and even world record-breaking efforts.

Recor first appeared in Hanover with his signature ornate gold mask with spikes this past fall and has experienced mixed receptions from students and community members. According to Recor, confusion is often among the reactions.

This school's mascot situation is ridiculous. Honestly, what happened? During my first two years here, there was a whole mess of competition and controversy over what our mascot should be. In the past two years, that debate seems to have completely died out, and we appear to be satisfied with leaving several pseudo-mascots (Dartmoose, Keggy, nothing) on the proverbial and literal playing field, without actually coming to a decision. This needs to change.

Members of the Class of 2013, your Dartmouth brainwashing is almost over. The carefully designed indoctrination program that you have been undergoing since the first day of DOC Trips will culminate in a pagan-esque ritual involving fire and the chanting of certain ritual recitations on the evening of Friday, Oct. 23. If all goes well, from this point forward, you will forever be loyal Dartmouth devotees, with green blood and all the granite of New Hampshire in your veins.

Whenever I read a party blitz that has the word "kegs" in it, I am always less excited to go to that party than I was before. Or, when the Jack-O-Lantern blitzes out about how Keggy the Keg was stolen, I can't help but not care as much as I should. If somebody stole a Canny the Can mascot, though, then I might actually get angry. This is because, as current alcohol policy stands, kegs are so much of a pain to register and use that the Keystone can has become the symbol of alcohol on campus.

Here are a couple of predictions for this coming weekend. Michael Moore's new film, "Capitalism: A Love Story," is going to tank. The season finale of "Entourage" won't be that fun to watch. And Dartmouth football is going to win its first game since 2007.

Dartmouth women's basketball head coach Chris Wielgus was recently honored as the 2008-2009 New England Coach of the Year. Last season, Dartmouth made its fifth-consecutive postseason appearance, going on to win its 17th Ivy League championship. During her career at Dartmouth, Wielgus has won 12 Ivy League championships, claiming at least a share of the Ivy League title in four of the last five years. Wielgus was inducted to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004 and will be formally recognized in October for her latest achievement.

Harper, the first female athletic director in the Ivy League, ascended to the post in 2002, after being a nationally-recognized women's lacrosse coach at the College since 1981. Harper cited her age and the retirement of former College President James Wright as factors in her decision to retire, The Dartmouth previously reported.

In this post-Green Key America, I feel as if I literally have nothing positive or worthwhile to bring to society. I'm always sleepy, I don't know where any of my left shoes are and, for the past two hours, I've been trying to charge my Dell with this Mac charger I found on the Green. So I'm sitting alone, avoiding one-on-one interactions at all costs, trying to think of something to write about in reference to "Alternative Social Spaces," which I must say is the silliest theme for the Mirror since "Frats: Are They Too Classy?" (April 2007).

Since Josie Harper announced her retirement a few weeks ago, there has been a lot written both about her legacy as a coach and an administrator. This article will do no such thing. Rather, Jordo and I are going to write about what we would like to see Dartmouth Athletics become in the coming years. Although we do not yet know who the new athletic director will be, we each compiled a three-part wish-list based on the what changes could positively benefit Dartmouth athletics.
