On Sunday, the Class of 1953 Commons opened for late-night dining, joining Novack Cafe and the Goldstein Snack Bar as the three late-night options this summer. The Courtyard Cafe, which offers both daytime and late-night dining during the academic year, will remain fully closed throughout the summer, according to the Dartmouth Dining webpage.

Various Big Green sports have excelled throughout this past school year after the pandemic brought a series of disruptions to competition and training. The Dartmouth sits down with members of women’s rugby, football and baseball to recap their seasons.
This past week, three track and field athletes traveled to the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Ind. to compete in the NCAA East Region Preliminaries. Jake Dalton ’23 and Myles Schreck ’22 competed in the hammer throw, and Julia Fenerty ’23 ran the 800-meter race.

Softball
In 1970, Dartmouth baseball set the Ivy League record for consecutive wins with 21. Over 50 years later, Columbia University came to Hanover riding high on a 19-game streak, hoping to break that record. In addition to preserving the legacy of the 1970 Ivy League champions, Dartmouth’s 2022 squad was looking to earn its own spot in the Championship Series. While the Big Green was not ultimately able to qualify for the postseason series, the team defended its record and secured a victory in the Columbia series to close out its season in fairytale fashion on May 15.
The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships on May 7 and May 8, which were held at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. While the women’s team finished sixth and the men took seventh, individual athletes in both programs posted strong results.
When the lights dimmed in the Boston Royale, the crowd immediately went silent. A figure walked out from stage right, dressed in a red suit and a red coat with exaggerated shoulder pads. As Rina Sawayama struck her starting pose and the opening chords of “Dynasty” began to play, the crowd erupted in cheers.
Last June, I had the not-so-delightful experience of being randomly placed on the housing waitlist. Despite the College offering a $5,000 incentive for students to give up a claim to fall housing in June, I and 128 other students remained in limbo in July. It was only in mid-August that I finally learned I would live on campus. This persistent uncertainty, compounded by my work as editor-in-chief and re-entry into classes after a pandemic gap year, was exhausting.
Coming off a strong previous week that included another Ivy League series win against Cornell University, baseball had solid outings this week to stay in the title conversation. Despite suffering a close 3-1 loss against the College of the Holy Cross on Tuesday, the Big Green was able to take care of business against Harvard University over the weekend. In the three-game series, Dartmouth won the first game with eight runs to Harvard’s six, lost by a score of 6-1 in the second and won the third 15-2. Dartmouth came into the weekend maintaining its third place ranking in the Ivy League, while Harvard was not too far behind in fourth. As the fight for the Ivy League title continues, Dartmouth improves to 21-16 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
Noticing the billowing smokestack towering over the southern part of campus and the oil trucks that regularly make deliveries there, I decided to do some research. I discovered that Dartmouth’s heating plant, which has been supplying heat to campus since 1903, uses 3.5 million gallons of No. 6 fuel oil each year to heat campus.
Tuesday, April 26
The women’s rowing team had a successful showing at the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. last weekend. The regatta brought together all the teams in the Big Ten Conference as well as about ten other invited teams.
Wednesday, April 20
Big Green baseball had a productive week, overtaking the University at Albany on Wednesday and Princeton University during a weekend series in Hanover. Dartmouth came away with some strong performances to beat Albany 12-5 and Princeton 6-2, 11-6 and 16-7 in the three games of this Ivy League series. With these wins against Princeton, the Big Green has moved into the top three in the Ivy League standings with 8 wins and 4 losses in conference play, while improving its overall record to 16-13.
Men’s tennis has commenced the 2022 Ivy League season. Currently, the Big Green is 8-9 and 0-3 in conference matches. The team started its Ivy League play on April 2 against the only three nationally ranked Ivy League teams: No. 15 Harvard University, No. 58 Cornell University and No. 23 Columbia University. The team fell in a 7-0 loss to Harvard, followed by a 4-1 loss to Cornell and a 7-0 loss to Columbia on April 9 and 10, respectively.
Wednesday, April 13
Oliver Bub ’20, a former member of Dartmouth’s heavyweight rowing team, has continued his journey on the water — now in hopes of making the 2024 Paris USA Olympic Team. While his final collegiate season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bub was a strong performer for the Big Green throughout his collegiate career.
On April 5, Dartmouth hosted the 2022 Pro Timing Day for draft-eligible players. Seth Walter ’21 and Niko Mermigas ’21 — both of whom played for Dartmouth this past fall season — as well as Nigel Alexander ’20, Caylin Parker ’20, Isiah Swann ’20 and University of New Hampshire’s Evan Horn all participated in the event.
