Many of this summer's planned social events have failed to live up to their promises. The much-touted Secret Garden dance drew relatively few students, despite omnipresent advertising and expenditures of nearly $15,000 from Class Council and other groups. Additionally, the bland Summer Carnival soaked up significant funds yet failed to stimulate student interest.

Today could be the day that decides the direction of our country. It could be the day that you register to vote.

By breaking into Yale's admissions website, Princeton has committed an act that is not only unethical, bone-headed and probably illegal but also a significant blow to how we understand the ethics of the Ivy League colleges we attend.

When '04 Class Council President John "Doc" Kupiec's sent out his letter encouraging students to "demonstrate that we can be responsible adults" and thus ensure that Tubestock does not go the way of the Winter Carnival keg jump (gone, but far from forgotten), he intended to help save a tradition fighting for its very survival. The means by which Kupiec wishes to keep Tubestock up and running, however, threaten to alter the core character of the event.

Last Thursday, Lindsay Earls '05 lost a four-year battle when the Supreme Court handed down a ruling upholding the right of the Tecumseh, Okla. school district to test students at random for illegal drugs. Unfortunately, the Court's ruling in Board of Education vs. Earls lacks a firm constitutional basis and allows for the routine violation of students' privacy.

When Dartmouth announced Charles Harris as its new athletic director, the move initially seemed a tremendous coup for the school -- Harris was without a doubt among the most respected men in collegiate athletics. Over a 30-year career that has included 12 years as the athletic director at powerhouse Arizona State University and a recent stint as the Chairman of the NCAA Management Council (one of the most prestigious positions in college sports), Harris couldn't have amassed a better resume. Ironically, it was that resume that cost him his job at Dartmouth.

Administrators handed down a policy last Friday that both undermines the very Student Life Initiative objectives it purports to advance and fosters an atmosphere of distrust between students and College officials. The administration must now work to correct last week's mistakes.

With the implementation of the first changes following the Initiative, students will not see more social and residential options. Rather, they will find wheels affixed to their basement bars.

When the Coed Fraternity Sorority Council elected summer leaders Sunday night, it took a step in the right direction. It was a step toward forming the "substantially coeducational" community that we've heard about so much recently.

As the summer sun finally emerges from the doldroms of a dreary spring, the Class of 2002 faces a new challenge: the challenge of leading. As the group potentially most pivotal in the unfolding of the Student Life Initiative, '02s this summer have the opportunity to positively influence the inevitable change and take the forefront of the march toward a better Dartmouth.

Thursday night's reactions to Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity's and Delta Delta Delta sorority's plans for a "luau" party were entirely inappropriate.

The decision of the College to purchase 15 off-campus under-graduate houses sparked suspicion and fear among students living in those apartments. The College has officially stated it does not know yet what it will do with its new acquisitions, but it should listen to current occupants and keep them as student houses functioning separately from other College housing options.

Although the Trustee steering committee has an open-door policy for students to present ideas and opinions, the door remains firmly closed on the disclosure of any of those proceedings. Since the creation of the committee, its policy has been one of confidentiality, and students' criticisms of this policy are fair.

One of the most popular criticisms of Dartmouth is that there is nothing to do here. Although Hanover's bar and club scene may be limited, there is much more to do at the College than study in a library or party in a fraternity basement.

Although sophomore summer demands that students make many adjustments, there are some sacrifices that should not have to be made regardless of the size of the student body. One of these is the right to a reasonable variety of dining options.

Sophomore summer is unlike any other term at Dartmouth. With sports teams in the off-season and extracurricular activities relaxed, students will have unprecedented opportunities to meet new people, try new things and see new places.

Sundaynight's discussion about the offensive poem read aloud at Beta Theta Pi fraternity's Wednesday meetings prematurely ended a discussion that should be opened up to the entire campus. Hopefully the College's investigation will succeed in bringing the discussion out from behind closed doors.

Bytaking away the Humanities 1 and 2 sequence's status as a freshman seminar, the Committee on Instruction made an important move toward maintaining the integrity of academics at Dartmouth.
