After a long evaluative process last year by the Student Assembly that included a report from the newly-created Club Sports Commission, this fall has seen marked differences in the way club sports is run. While the athletic department and Assembly have been encouraged by the changes, there are still issues that remain unresolved that both organizations will be working to improve.

While varsity sports receive a majority of the press, Dartmouth has plenty of club sports, too, and this year has begun with three more club sports than the last. The athletics department has recognized the women's club lacrosse team, the Kung Fu club and the polocrosse team over the past year, as the club sports scene at Dartmouth continues to expand.

Eight athletes will compete at the NCAA regional meet this weekend with hopes of earning the right to compete at nationals early next month. Several of the athletes that have led the scoring for the Big Green all season have qualified to run, jump and throw against the East's best at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C., this Friday and Saturday.

Both teams had success at the meet at MIT, as the men finished second in a 36-team field behind the University of Rhode Island's 124.5-point finish with 96.5 points. The women took third out of 37 teams with 57.5 points. The University of Connecticut dominated the women's meet with 225.25 points, and Williams came in second behind them with 74.25 points.

The distance medley relay of sophomores Harry Norton '08, Charles Stoebe '08, Mike Carmody '08 and True set a new school record with a 9:37.61 run. Their run bested the 17-year-old distance medley relay record of 9:39.21, set in 1989.

Wiegmann qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the javelin with a winning 146'5" throw, then capped off a strong day with a 5'10" clearance to win the high jump. The leap set a school record and was good enough to qualify her for the NCAA meet.

While a coxswain steers and handles decision-making duties instead of physically rowing during competition on the water, Cholnoky has always strived to be just as capable as the rowers he coaches -- and this year has been no exception. Cholnoky has been training with the varsity heavyweights in preparation for the spring season.

Ogbonna, ranked second in the Ivies in the 60-meter hurdles, was soon to compete in the finals. But the national anthem had to be sung, and the gospel choir was to perform at noon, a mere 25 minutes before his race. The baritone made no fuss about his impending race, joining the choir and singing the anthem shortly before stepping into the blocks and winning the Ivy League title.

Dartmouth saw strong performances from many of its top athletes, but ultimately lacked the necessary depth to score high in the team standings. Mike Carmody '08 and Ikechi Ogbonna '06 highlighted the weekend for Dartmouth's men, claiming Ivy titles in the 800-meter and 60-meter hurdles, respectively, while Melanie Schorr '06 and Kelsey Wiegmann '06 qualified for NCAA consideration while competing in multiple events for the women.

Cornell, which pulled off the sweep last year as both the Big Red men and women captured their respective titles, is favored to repeat this year. Princeton and Penn should both represent strong competition for first place on the men's side, but Cornell's women seem poised to continue their run of four consecutive Ivy League titles.

Dartmouth track and field was in action this weekend, competing in the aptly-named Dartmouth Indoor Classic at Leverone Field House. The Big Green had a large portion of its athletes competing, and saw strong performances and continued improvement from many of them.
