The Big Green track and field teams showed off their talent at home this weekend, while over 1,000 miles away another Dartmouth athlete continued her excellent spring.
Kelsey Wiegmann '06 set a new school record in the javelin en route to an NCAA provisional-standard heptathlon performance. Her throw of 151'6" bested the record Wiegmann herself had set previously. The senior scored 5,172 points in the heptathlon, taking third at the Bulldog Limited and Georgia Heptathlon at the University of Georgia.
In addition to winning the javelin, Wiegmann also won the 800 meters against her heptathlon competition, turning in a 2:21.73 run.
Back home in Hanover Saturday, the Big Green contended with some typical wet and windy New England weather and produced a number of winners at Dartmouth's own outdoor track and field meet. Fatih Stanley '06's wins in the 100 meters and 200 meters for the men and Jamila Smith '06's wins in the shot put and hammer throw for the women highlighted Dartmouth's performances.
"I thought that the meet on Saturday went well despite some adverse weather conditions," men's head coach Barry Harwick '77 said. "This was our last meet on that track, so I'm glad that we had some good performances."
Stanley bested the field by seven-tenths of a second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.99 seconds, while in the 100 meters Brian Evans '08 was the only runner within half a second of Stanley's 10.73-second run, taking second in 10.87.
Smith's 43'1" throw in the shot outdistanced her competition by nearly three feet, while Smith's season-best hammer launch of 160'3" was seven feet better than the rest.
The men also had winning performances from Daniel Obaseki '07, Alan Shanoski '09 and Derrick Vinklarek '08. Obaseki ran the 800 meters in 1:56.78, Shanoski leapt 6'4" in the high jump and Vinklarek set a new personal best by clearing 15'6.25" to win the pole vault.
Winning for the women were Jessica Long '08 in the discus with a 141'10" throw, Jadah Chatterton-Richmond '07 with a 17'8.25" long jump and Micaela Carwell '08, who covered 35'11.5" in the triple jump.
Natalie Todd-Zebell '09 cleared 12'0" in the pole vault to lead a Dartmouth first through fourth place sweep of the event. Erika Graham '08 took second in the event with an 11'6" vault.
The Lady Green's hurdling corps had a solid day, as Mattie Chatterton-Richmond '06 and Karen Woolley '09 took the top two places in the 400-meter hurdles, Chatterton-Richmond clocking in at 1:05.99 and Woolley crossing in 1:07.02.
The hurdlers also fared well in the 100-meter high hurdles, with three women cracking the 15-second mark. Victoria Michelotti led Dartmouth's hurdlers, taking third with a 14.83 second run, while Woolley and Jadah Chatterton-Richmond '07 both crossed in 14.98 to take fourth and fifth, respectively.
Dartmouth also saw a couple of its All-American alumni return to compete unaffiliated, as Mustafa Abdur-Rahim '04 leapt 22'11" to win the long jump and Sean Furey '04 won the javelin with a 220'5" throw.
With the outdoor Heptagonal (Ivy League) Championships less than two weeks away, the Big Green has started to shift its focus from competing in meets to fine-tuning and training as it sets its sights on what will be the culmination of the season for many of Dartmouth's athletes.
Next weekend a limited number of Dartmouth's athletes will see action at the three-day Penn Relays, but the majority of the team will remain in Hanover training and preparing to journey to the University of Pennsylvania the following weekend for Heps.
"The Penn Relays are the biggest meet in the country and I am very excited that we are part of that," said Harwick.
