Well, loyal readers, the day has finally come — our last article and the end of the saga of the 2013-14 Rec League Legends. This season, we tried our best and experienced a few victories (we are not going to quantify exactly how many because the details are irrelevant). Most importantly, we had a lot of great times and some unforgettable experiences with some of Dartmouth’s best athletes.

Loyal readers, our tenure as the Rec League Legends is coming to an end. I know, you are sad. We are sad. The only people who probably aren’t sad are the competitors who look good at our expense and the editors who put up with our shenanigans. We have left you with a lot of questions, but the one that we would truly like to address in this column is probably the most important: what’s next in the careers of the Rec League Legends?

Hanover, it looks like you finally got it right. It’s spring outside after what feels like the longest tease since the Sox won a title and the Curse of the Bambino was finally lifted from Fenway (hey Freddie). Spring weather means one thing and one thing only: intramural softball. Though we obviously discussed squaring off against the softball team, we realized that they were probably up against other (obviously not more important) opponents after winning that whole Ivy League Championship thing for the first time in Dartmouth history. That, and we wanted nothing to do with Morgan McCalmon ’16 and her heater.

This week the Legends were ready to take on the men’s lacrosse team, a competition that I had been trash talking the entire year. Lacrosse is the only sport I ever played competitively, and I looked forward to matching up against the Big Green’s best. I was also looking forward to seeing Austin get out on the lacrosse field and seeing what he would do with a six foot pole in his hands.

Sports fans, this was truly a giant week in Legends history. After realizing that a comeback and sweet redemption has been mathematically impossible since the sixth week of winter term, we have truly embraced the senior spring philosophy and gone for the long ball — things we would not usually have any CHANCE of success in, but we have always wanted to try. Spoiler alert: we really have had no success in many of these things, but they have been a blast.

Loyal readers, real spring in the Northeast is finally upon us and you all know what that means: 50 degree temperature changes, puddles in places that defy both logic and gravity, Red Sox baseball, the Bruins in the playoffs and, most importantly, a sport we can all participate in: Marathon Monday in Boston.
(04/13/14 8:29pm)
Well, loyal readers, it finally happened. The spring finally came and, with it, the best day of the year: “Sports Day.” During “Sports Day,” classes are canceled (because it’s always on a Saturday), social events are enjoyed (often on porches) and friends come together to cheer on Dartmouth sporting events and throw every chirp they can possibly imagine at opposing teams from lesser colleges and universities.

It looks like spring has finally sprung here in Hanover. With warmer temperatures come two things: shorts and huge Dartmouth athletics home weekends.

Loyal readers, this is the season you have all been waiting for. The sun will come out. The tennis courts will be back in action. The golf course will open. Intramural softball will be played and taken way too seriously by a select few (ourselves included).

For varsity athletes, spring break means one thing: training trips. Since we are looking to beat varsity athletes, Austin and I figured we should go on training trips of our own. With teammwork taken care of, we struck out on our own paths to prepare physically, mentally and, most importantly, emotionally for the upcoming spring (which won’t likely arrive until Derby or Green Key, unless College President Phil Hanlon sold his soul for a sunny Dimensions weekend).

We’ve reached the end of the term, and we all know what that means: championship season. For all of us athletes (yes, the Rec League Legends qualify, even if we don’t get a PE credit), now is the time when winter season really matters. Put all of that other stuff behind you. Focus on winning the championship — at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. Right, Lebron?

As the Sochi Olympics come to a close and semi-obscure events like bobsled drift back into irrelevance (though no one can forget “Cool Runnings” (1993)), we decided to break the one rule we set for the winter. That’s right, faithful readers. Those of you who follow us religiously, which is probably all of you, will recall that we solemnly swore never to Nordic ski. It’s physically taxing, cold and isolating, and we don’t look great in skin-tight apparel (just kidding).

Faithful readers, this week has been trying for us and for our sleep schedules. Between the U.S. winning the “Ice Cold War” in front of Vladimir Putin, Dartmouth athletes absolutely killing it Sochi and contemplating blitzing Sophie Caldwell ’12 to ask if she wants to grab a FoCo meal some time, we have not had time to think about much else.

Loyal, faithful readers, at the beginning of this term, we promised you victory at all costs. We promised to try harder, to work out more, to eat better and to live for our sports. Well, we all make stupid promises at the beginning of term, and as many of you know from the miniscule amount of work you did this weekend, sometimes those promises are hard to keep. We regret nothing. We had a great Carnival. No apologies.

This week Austin and I took the competition to our peers, and by peers, we mean fellow students who compete for intramural glory and can’t pass muster. We were excited for the reprieve from facing the grind of varsity athletes in their sports of choice, returning to the place from which we started our climb to becoming Rec League Legends. Recording some time in the Moosilauke League is also a great way to boost our community service stats.

Last week, the Legends issued a New Year’s proclamation (way more intense than any old resolution) that 2014 would be a year of victory for the Legends. We would put fall term’s near-losses behind us and think only about our future as the premier intramural champions on this campus — or at least the only ones who take the time to write about it each week.

Loyal readers, welcome back to the greatest show on earth. It’s a new term and for many of you, that probably means a new, fresh start. You probably vowed to really change things around this term, probably because mom and dad saw your grades and were a little disappointed because they “pay enough for a nice house or an entire city block in Detroit” for you to go here. We get it.

This, faithful readers, will be our last battlefield update of the fall season. For those of you who have stuck it out with us thus far, only to have your hearts broken as the good guys (our story, so we are the good guys) drop so many (sort of) close ones, we appreciate your love and support.
(11/10/13 7:33pm)
First off, on a serious note, Austin and I extend our sincere thanks and gratitude for all of those brave men and women who have and continue to defend our country. Without these heroes, funny (or not so funny) articles such as this one, and the free speech that we are blessed with in this country, would not be possible. Take time this week to thank someone you know who has served in the Armed Forces, whether it’s a friend, family member or classmate.

Although we tried our best to avoid it, our Facebook newsfeeds have been bombarded by posts of “campus dialogues” to the point where we thought if we read just one, the others might go away. They did not. They multiplied like all the Sox fans coming out of the woodwork and it makes videos that show just how wrong Jim Joyce was again on a huge call in the biggest stage in baseball excruciatingly more difficult. We’re over it, just like Galarraga.
